Carolyn Buss

Instructional Developer & Reading Coach

Carolyn Buss, M.A., has been an instructional developer and reading coach at the Institute for Reading Research since 2003. She is currently working on the Scaling Up Effective Interventions for Preventing Reading Difficulties research project, funded in 2003 under the Interagency Educational Research Initiative (IERI) by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education. Ms. Buss develops and implements staff development guides and conducts staff development training for teachers participating in this research project. Her area of expertise is the Proactive Reading curriculum.

Ms. Buss joined the Institute in 2003, collaborating with SRA Publications to revise the Proactive Level 1 curriculum for publication as SRA’s Early Interventions in Reading. Her previous experience with the Proactive Reading series includes three years with the University of Texas – Houston, where she developed assessment and placement tests to determine mastery of the materials, and collected research data. A former classroom teacher, Ms. Buss also served for 5 years as coordinator of the Special Education Department in the Alief School District in Houston, Texas. She earned her M.A. as a Reading Specialist and her B. S. in Elementary Education from Lamar University in Texas, and holds certification in both Special Education and ESL.
