Master of Science in Counseling Student Selected as Maguire Internship Recipient

Lindsay Wilson, a student in the School's M.S. in Counseling program, was recently selected as one of eight recipients of a Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility public service internship.  Lindsay will perform her internship at Our Friends' Place, serving on the treatment team that works with girls and young women who have been neglected, abandoned, or otherwise abused in their lives.  Lindsay sees this as a way to become involved with others while continuing to pursue a Master's degree in counseling through SMU's Plano campus.  Lindsey's service at Our Friends Place will also give her valuable experience in the field prior to beginning her practicum and internship in the counseling program.

Our Friends' Place provides an important and unique service in Dallas County for one of the most needy and troubled client populations -- girls and young women. Through therapeutic residential care and teaching independent living skills, girls with histories of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and behavioral problems are able to experience a safe and stable homelike environment. By providing this important community service, Our Friends' Place helps girls with serious problems get the care they need. This care, which they might not otherwise receive, teaches them how to rebuild their lives.

Over the past twelve years, SMU's Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility has awarded summer intern stipends to over 90 SMU students for public service and research in ethics.  The Center has served over eighty agencies in twelve Texas cities, twelve states, and nine countries outside the USA.  Through such opportunities, students see the face of suffering and gain concrete information about others' needs, as well as differing perspectives on how to resolve them.  In the process, they draw on their university education and personal talent, honing skills as leaders and gaining both humility and self-confidence.  They also gain experience, which illuminates concepts taught in the classroom and enables them to engage in public service where financial circumstances might not otherwise allow.
