Girls Talk Back, an exciting one-week summer camp for outstanding young women entering the 11th grade, is a first-time partnership between SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development and the Foundation for the Education of Young Women.
Students will participate in three classes, one course in the morning and two in the afternoon. Every young woman selected will attend a writing seminar each morning. Designed to polish skills in written “talk back,” each participant will work to improve expertise in communication. In the afternoon students will rotate to public speaking and professional etiquette classes. The faculty is comprised of SMU professors, as well as teachers from public and private schools and recognized community leaders.
The Girls Talk Back program offers participants the chance to live in a centrally located, supervised SMU residence hall for one week. The specially trained staff oversees a wide variety of evening activities. These experiences enable participants to interact, create friendships, and enjoy a preview of college life—all in a safe, controlled environment.
All students live in an air-conditioned residence hall. Students are housed two to a room with adjoining or hall bathrooms. Rooms are furnished with two single beds, chests of drawers, desks, chairs, and window blinds. Linens are provided. Students must furnish reading lamps, alarm clocks, blankets, pillows and personal belongings. Carefully selected residential counselors (RCs) live in the residence hall to provide guidance and supervision. All young women dine in the SMU cafeteria.
Application requirements include recommendations, transcripts/grades, PSAT scores, and student essays. Complete application packets must be received by April 1, 2008. The Application Form is available for download in PDF format. Download PDF Application Form
Tuition and fees for the program total $750, which includes room, board, books, and most supplies. An application fee of $25 must accompany all applications.
