Office of the Dean

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that as of June 1, 2008, SMU Continuing and Professional Education will be known as SMU Continuing and Professional Education (CAPE). A locally and nationally recognized leader in adult learning, this unit serves over 6000 students annually, and its new name recognizes new strides in continuing education at SMU. Part of the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education & Human Development, CAPE is well positioned to offer expanded noncredit continuing education in the liberal and fine arts to our campus and community in addition to it growing emphasis on professional development.

As a part of this expansion, the Meadows Community Education program will merge with the SMU Informal Courses for Adults program. Hosted by CAPE, this integration will offer increased opportunities for public programming and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as lessen duplication of efforts across campus.

In addition to providing expanded liberal and fine arts programming, CAPE will also be home to several important community outreach initiatives and noncredit professional development programs. Of particular note are expanded programming for educators and certificate programs in financial planning, nonprofit leadership, and Spanish for the Workplace.

In addition, continuing education efforts of several other programs will be offered through CAPE beginning this fall including the Center for Counseling & Mediation and the School of Engineering.

CAPE will be lead by Amy Claire Heitzman, M.Ed., who has extensive experience in adult education administration. To learn more about SMU Continuing & Professional Education, visit www.smu.edu/CAPE.

Sincerely,
