Lecturer of Math and/or Science Education

The Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University seeks a full-time lecturer for the 2008-2009 academic year. This non-tenured appointment is renewable annually. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in science and/or mathematics education in the Department of Teaching and Learning. The position requires experience in science and/or mathematics education (content and methods) and expertise in curricular development in these areas.  Preference will be given to candidates who have degrees in science and/or mathematics and evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level. Minimal qualifications include (a) a master’s degree or terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D) in education, an education-related field, science or mathematics and (b) a minimum of three years experience in teaching or administration in a pre-K-12 setting.  Preference will be given to candidates with a terminal degree who have broad experiences across the elementary and secondary grades. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Lecturer of Counseling

The Annette Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University seeks a full-time Lecturer for the Counseling Program at the Legacy Campus. Principal responsibilities teaching counseling course work, advising students, serving as a departmental learning specialist, facilitating technology oriented communication systems (i.e., Blackboard, website development, etc.), functioning as a liaison with technology services and the main campus, and providing technology and writing support for departmental projects.  This is a non-tenured position that is eligible for a renewable one-year contract to begin August 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009.

The successful candidate must have a terminal degree in a relevant discipline (Ed.D. or Ph.D.); teaching experience in counseling and related topics with specific emphasis on psycho-educational assessment and interpretation, career development, and life-style/life-span theory; clinical experience in the field as a learning theorist/specialist; experience in clinical practice; and strong technology expertise and communications skills in the writing field.

Preference will be given to candidates with a relevant degree in counseling or a related field, professional experience in a clinical setting, polished skills in writing and computer technology, and practical experience as a professional in the field.  Other desired qualifications include strong organizational, time management, and personnel management skills, as well as expertise in the field of learning theory, life span development, and psycho-educational assessment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Professor of Exercise Physiology (Open Rank)

Southern Methodist University offers an exciting unique opportunity for an emerging or seasoned scholar to join in the design and implementation of a new major in Sport and Fitness Management and Promotion while developing his/her program of research.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology; a record of scholarly research; evidence of success in or strong potential for obtaining external funding; an interest and expertise in designing, equipping, and managing a new physiology of exercise laboratory; a desire to provide high quality undergraduate instruction; and a willingness to play an integral role in the growth, development, and identity of the new major program scheduled to begin in the fall semester of 2009.  Preference will be given to applicants with successful post-doctoral experience; a clear research agenda; a strategy for seeking external funding; secondary expertise in Biomechanics; an ability to work with faculty colleagues; and a commitment to teaching.

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will have a year to develop course proposals in exercise physiology, nutrition, measurement and evaluation; aerobic prescriptions leading to certifications; strength prescriptions leading to certifications; and other courses deemed appropriate in the planning of the new undergraduate major curriculum.  The candidate will also be responsible for establishing a physiology of exercise laboratory planned for a new education and human development facility to open in 2010.  The candidate should have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills that promote strong research and training collaborations in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

This tenure or tenure-track position (# 53014) begins fall semester 2008. Salary is competitive and salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications. Development

Advancement Officer Specialist:  Director of Development

Subdivison/Area:  Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development

Salary Range:  Salary commensurate with experience

Responsibilities:  The Director of Development for the School is a fund-raising, portfolio-driven position with project management responsibilities. The director serves as the chief development strategist and staff assistant to the dean of the School regarding the management of major and prospective donors to the School.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the portfolio of principal donors to the Simmons School of Education and Human Development for the campaign, which includes development strategies;

  • Coordinating development-related activities within the School as well as across campus;

  • Managing the direction of all relevant proposals, next steps and forecasts;

  • Serving as the primary point of contact for the School on all development-related activities, including prospect research, personal visits, correspondence and events;

  • Establishing and integrating development priorities that are in alignment with central development and setting objectives for the annual giving, planned giving and corporate and foundation relations programs;

  • Working with alumni affairs staff to integrate programming for the School with the overall SMU alumni programs;

  • Collaborating with the School's senior staff on marketing, public relations and related external affairs functions in coordination with the relevant officers in the division of Development and External Affairs;

  • Developing and executing the stewardship and donor relations activities and programs for the School in conjunction with the programs lead by the division of Development and External Affairs and the School; and

  • Working with the Dean's office and senior staff in setting the development agenda for the School's Executive Board and related groups.

Education and Experience:  Bachelor's Degree with five years of professional experience required; Graduate Degree preferred. Major gifts fundraising experience with a track record of soliciting and closing gifts of $25,000 or greater is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  Candidates must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills that have been developed in positions of increasing responsibility.  Candidates must possess experience in a complex institutional environment where coordination, teamwork and communication are paramount in importance.  Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills are essential.  A working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2007 (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook calendar) and database software is essential. Candidate must also possess the ability to learn new applications quickly.  Familiarity with Dallas and other major Texas cities is preferred.  Experience working with volunteers and boards is preferred.  Some travel required.
