DMSA Services

Orientation of Minority Students (OMS)

The purpose of the Minority Student Orientation is to give first year minority students the opportunity to make key connections with the university before classes begin in August on a personal level. Students are exposed to resources on campus that will assist in their success at SMU.

Scholarship Information Services

Each year millions of dollars in scholarship money go unclaimed. Our department is working hard to provide students with scholarship information and help them apply for these scholarships. Coordinators will provide this information via e-mail, bulletin board posting, and during one-on-one meetings. Coordinators are also available to write recommendations upon request. Please visit our office in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Suite # 323.

Diversity Education Program (DEP)

The mission of the Diversity Education Program is to train students to serve as peer educators. Students are selected each year to participate in diversity training. Training includes small-group discussion, games, simulations, case studies, and role-plays. DEP students conduct diversity education games and simulations for residence halls, new students, student leaders and student organizations.

MLK Week

This is a weeklong program of activities, speakers, and workshops on the life and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Its main purpose is to educate the community on the principles of Justice, Equality, Peace, and Unity (JEPU). This week is a collaborative effort coordinated by the department, implemented and executed by a committee of students and financially supported through fundraising and by the SMU community.

Multicultural Academic Awards Ceremony

During the spring semester, the department recognizes the academic achievement of all minority students. Students who have achieved a 3.0 or above cumulative grade point average are recognized. Students are recognized for their hard work and dedication in the presence of their parents, family, university administrators, and their peers.

CONNECT

The purpose of Connect is to match first year minority students with upper-class students to assist in their transition to Southern Methodist University. Mentors will help guide students through the challenges related to college life.

Presidents’ Dinner

Every spring semester the DMSA staff shows its appreciation for the presidents of organizations housed in the department.

The Food Chain

The Food Chain began in 2001 with the goal of bringing the women of color on campus together for friendship, networking and conversation. We thank everyone for their support and look forward to adding more links to the chain this year. For more information on "The Food Chain" please contact Karen Click, Director of the Women's Center Ph:214-768-4796 or Jenifer Jones Ph: 214-768-4425
