The SMU Spanish major encompasses the skills of learning to read, write, and speak the language with clarity. Courses give you an appreciation for the great works of literature and cultural heritage of the Hispanic world, which includes both the Iberian peninsula and Latin America in addition to portions of the United States. State-of-the-art language labs and classrooms, plus study abroad programs in Spain and Mexico, allow you to experience Hispanic life firsthand. The Spanish Club organizes year-round activities for students and faculty.

Related Majors and Minors
Spanish lends itself well to pursuing a double major in such areas as art history, religious studies, music, marketing, political science, business management, and sociology. Preparation for teacher certification is available through the Center for Teacher Education.

Spanish graduates are sought-after in a number of diverse fields like tourism, international business and law, foreign trade relations, social work, public relations, news media, medicine, government, and education.

Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center.
The SMU Study Abroad Program has great opportunities to study intensively in predominantly Spanish-speaking countries. Immerse yourself with summer or semester-long programs at SMU-in-Spain, SMU-in-Xalapa, Mexico, or another Hispanic study abroad program.
