Courses provide a balance of diversity and specialization. Delve into the powerful sagas of U.S. and European history, explore ethnic and women’s studies, and compare world cultures. For discovering the cultures of the Southwest, history majors have a working laboratory at SMU-in-Taos and a unique resource in the Clements Center for Southwest Studies.

Related Majors and Minors
Majors that combine well with a history degree include business, economics, English, religious studies, philosophy, and journalism. A prelaw adviser is available to guide students interested in legal careers on appropriate courses and the law school application process. Preparation for teacher certification is available through the Center for Teacher Education.
Minors that build on a history major are classics, medieval studies, and women’s studies.
Careers
You’ll find history majors in a variety of professions and careers that demand decision-making, good communication, and researching of answers. In addition to being well prepared for law school, you can apply what you have learned to such endeavors as business, journalism, advertising, foreign service, education, film documentary production, and government work.
Faculty
Ranging from only 12 students in the intense junior seminar to an average of 25-30 students per section, history classes are led by distinguished faculty, many of whom have received teaching awards and have authored numerous works in a variety of fields.
Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Students majoring in history may be eligible to earn up to three (3) graded credits toward their degrees by enrolling for unpaid, faculty-directed internships through the Dedman College Internship Program.
History majors will find many exciting credit-earning possibilities in the SMU Study Abroad Program. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the globe. These programs are particularly beneficial to history majors: SMU-in-Australia, SMU-in-Copenhagen, SMU-in-Paris, SMU-in-Japan, SMU-in-Spain, SMU-in-Taipei, SMU-in-Oxford, SMU-Summer-in-Paris, and SMU-in-Taos.
