B.A.
in English with a Creative Writing Specialization
Students specializing in creative writing must fulfill all requirements
for the English major. Minimum 33 term hours of English courses. All 12 elective
hours
within the regular major must be devoted to specified courses related
to creative writing.

Related Majors & Minors
The creative writing specialization combines well with communications arts majors such as advertising, corporate communications and public affairs, or journalism, for a double major or minor.
Careers
From here, you can utilize your creative and analytical skills in numerous capacities. Some examples: playwright, fiction/nonfiction author, journalist, advertising copywriter, script “doctor,” corporate communications manager, and literary agent. Others find careers in academic settings. Preparation for teacher certification is available through the Center for Teacher Education.
Faculty
Every member of the creative writing faculty, has had his or her works published, and can impart suggestions on how you can do the same. They include poets, children’s book authors, novelists, and short story writers. Our staff is both friendly and very encouraging to budding writers.

Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Students majoring in creative writing may be eligible to earn up to three (3) graded credits toward their degrees by enrolling for unpaid, faculty-directed internships through the Dedman College Internship Program.
Creative writing majors can broaden their literary and inspirational horizons through the SMU Study Abroad Program. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the globe. The SMU-in-Paris, SMU-in-London: Communications, and SMU-in-Oxford programs are particularly relevant to English majors.
