Admissions

1. How much does it cost to apply to the SMU Evening Studies program?
$50.00

2. If I am accepted to the Evening Studies program, do I have to pay a deposit to reserve my seat?
Students entering the program after fall 2007 will be required to pay a $500.00 deposit in order to reserve their seats.

3. What are the deadlines for application submission, registration, and filing to graduate in the Evening Studies program?
The Evening Studies program adheres to the SMU Academic Calendar

4. What are the requirements for admission into the Evening Studies Program?
Students must transfer in at least 45 hours with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Students must complete the GEC English and Math Fundamentals requirement prior to applying to the SMU Evening Studies program. Transfer

5. I do not quite have the required number of transfer hours or meet the minimum GPA requirement. Can I be accepted into the program on conditional admission?
No. Dedman College will not admit students on a conditional basis.

6. Is there a limit on the number of hours I may transfer to SMU?
No. Students may transfer as many credits as they are able; However, SMU may not recognize all transferred courses as applicable credits toward a degree plan. Regardless of the number of transferable hours, students must complete all major and/or minor requirements and complete 60 units in residence at SMU with 42 at the advanced (3000+) level.

7. As a transfer student, am I eligible to waive any General Education (GEC) requirements?
Yes. Since you are required to have 45 transferable hours for admission, you may petition to waive one of the following GEC requirements:

• 6 units: Perspectives
• 6 units: Cultural Formations
• 3 units: Perspectives; 3 units: Cultural Formations

*To request this waiver, you will need to obtain a petition from the Dedman College Records Office in 214 Dallas Hall.

Advising

8. Whom do I meet with for advising?
Academic advising for the Evening Studies program is facilitated by the Dedman College Records Office in 214 Dallas Hall. Advising assignments are based on the first letter of a student’s last name:

9. How do I schedule an appointment with my advisor?
Please call 214-768-2298 or send an email to evening@smu.edu to schedule an appointment with your advisor.

10. What can I expect from an advising session?
Your advisor may assist you in choosing and scheduling courses, explaining degree plan requirements, explaining and directing the petition process, filing for graduation, and understanding your Degree Progress Report (DPR).

11. I am unavailable during the day, and I cannot make it to the SMU campus until after 5 p.m. each day. How or when will I be able to meet with my advisor?
In order to assist Evening Studies students, academic advisors will keep extended office hours until 7 p.m. for one week near the beginning of each semester.
You will have additional access to your advisor through email, telephone, and fax while seeking answers to general questions on the Evening Studies website.

Registration

12. How do I register for classes?
You may register for classes online at Access.SMU.edu or by visiting the Registrar’s Office in Room 101 of the Laura Lee Blanton Student Services Building (Building #44 on the SMU campus map). For detailed instructions, please review the Registrar's web site.

During orientation, SMU staff members will help direct you through the registration process. If you require further support, your advisor will be able to provide assistance during the initial advising session.

13. As an Evening Studies student, will I be assured a seat in SMU’s evening courses?
While students are not assured a seat, SMU does reserve seats in evening courses specifically for Evening Studies students. For enrollment purposes, these seats are indicated as “restricted seats.”

Financial Aid

14. As a part-time Evening Studies student, am I still eligible for financial aid?
Yes. Evening Studies students are eligible for certain types of financial aid such as Pell grants. To attain eligibility, students must be enrolled in 6-9 hours each semester and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The application may be filed on-line at the FAFSA website

15. Where do I go to pay tuition and fees?
Tuition and fee payments may be made online or by visiting the Bursar’s Office in the Laura Lee Blanton Student Services Building (Building #45 on the SMU campus map). To receive additional information regarding tuition and fee payments, please refer to the Bursar's web site.
