religious studies

Providing a lively environment that encourages close faculty interaction with students, the SMU Department of Religious Studies explores the history and beliefs of the world's major and regional faiths.

Traditions, ceremonies, various religious communities, and meanings of life across the centuries are compared and interpreted. The result is a richly rewarding and intellectually stimulating experience that will broaden your perspective on a variety of subjects.

Classes rarely exceed 40 students. Courses are offered in ancient and modern, and in Eastern and Western cultures. Graduates go on to work toward Master’s or Ph.D. degrees, as well as careers in law, ministry, social work, and other pursuits. Faculty members have received numerous awards and conduct insightful ongoing research.
