foreign languages & literatures

Achieving proficiency in one or more of the world's languages and cultures is the central mission of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at SMU.

As a student, you will master four essential linguistic skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In time, you also will grasp the social and cultural nuances related to your foreign language via a variety of media and the latest technologies as well as opportunities to live and study abroad. We offer a broad range of language and literature options, taught by faculty who are dedicated to working closely with students. The end result: an ability to communicate fluently with people in other cultures and great marketability in a wide range of careers with international applications.
