Position Information:

The Senior Research Writer in the office of Public Affairs produces research-related content and is responsible for coordinating and monitoring Public Affairs research-related coverage and projects in support of the mission and goals of the University and the division of Development and External Affairs. 

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Writing content for a lay audience that promotes faculty research and helps identify research-related stories for a variety of high-profile SMU publications and Web sites such as SMU Magazine, SMU Research Magazine, campaign-related publications and University Web sites, etc.;
  • Coordinating and monitoring Public Affairs' research-related coverage and projects and assuring regular coverage to include multimedia vehicles on the SMU Web site;
  • Overseeing other related research projects, including implementing the research news plan that highlights faculty research during The Second Century Campaign, which is seeking resources for academic advancements; and
  • Serving as quality control for fact-checking, faculty approvals and updates of research-related content, etc.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Journalism, English or a communications field. Master's degree a plus. A minimum of five years of work experience, preferably in writer positions of increasing responsibility. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment, meet deadlines and balance multiple assignments. Strong writing and grammar skills are essential with a strong attention to detail.

Candidates must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication due to heavy interaction with campus leadership and various campus officials. Must be a self-starter in developing story ideas and angles, obtaining information, meeting deadlines, and completing editorial projects. Experience in higher-education or in another non-profit environment is a desirable.  Experience with research writing or research content development is a plus.
