Research Guide: Women's Studies

The selections for this research guide should be of use to every women's studies student scholar. This short list should be used only as a starting point. SMU Libraries has many other resources that may be helpful for your specific research needs. Please consult with a librarian for help in using these tools or in locating additional information.

If you are looking for articles on cultural, economic, political, or social change from sources outside the mainstream, this is the database to search. America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts SMU Only
History provides a context for understanding political issues and societal norms. If you're looking for U.S. or Canadian topics and events, search America: History and Life. For the rest of world, use Historical Abstracts. You will find these databases useful for many of your courses, including: Social Problems; Chicanos of the Southwest; The Administration of Justice; and Political Sociology.

Covers global health and human rights issues cited by a variety of official reports, NGOs, journals, newsletters, and more.

You will notice that all three of these volumes are all located within the HQ subject heading, denoting that the title is about marriage, women, family, or sexuality. Each of these encyclopedias covers international perspectives of the aforementioned categories.

This two-volume set includes chapter-length entries written by experts with suggested readings, expels include: Cross-Cultural Sexual Practices; Family Roles and Patterns; Gender Development; Health and Health Care - How Gender Makes Women Sick; Media Influences; Men and Masculinity; Poverty and Women in the United States; and Sport and Athletics.

This index to psychological literature is broad in scope and you will find it helpful for researching topics for many courses, including : Health, Healing, and Ethics; Changing Sex Roles; Family Conflict; Social Effects of Mass Media; and Crime and Delinquency.

Routledge International Encyclopedia of Women HQ 1115 .R69 2000
Four volumes of brief entries with extensive bibliographies on topics such as: Dance, Feminism, Literature, Media, Music, Politics, and Sexuality - all with international outlook.

Women in World History: A Biographical Encyclopedia HQ1115 .W6 1999
Impressive in scope, this seventeen-volume set contains entries on over 10,000 women from all over the world who have left their impression. The introduction states, "The exclusion of women, as well as minorities, for standard texts has created a history that bears little resemblance to reality." This work attempts to remedy that. Additionally, there are over 100 genealogical charts for dynastic houses worldwide, including ancient monarchies.
