Bibliographies
Art Abstracts SMU Only Contains indexes and abstracts for over 450 international art periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins and includes indexing of art reproductions. Coverage focuses on a broad range of art topics, such as advertising, archaeology, folk art, graphic arts, film, architecture and art history. Indexing begins in 1984 and continues to the present. Includes basic and advanced search options.
Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals SMU Only Index includes over 2,500 major architecture and design periodicals of Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Australia along with American state and regional periodicals. It also includes obituaries of architects. Coverage begins in 1934 with selective coverage from 1741. Search modes available are basic, advanced and expert. Be aware that access is limited to one person at a time.
BHA, RILA and RAA
All three bibliographies are cumulatively indexed and in English and French. Citations include books and articles. Basic and advanced search modes are available on all three of them or individually.
BHA (Bibliography of the History of Art)
SMU Only Content coverage includes documents from 1973 to the present on traditional fine arts, decorative and applied arts, photography, performing arts, and other media. BHA is also available in print volumes from 1991-1995 on the Hamon Index Table in Reference.
RILA (International Repertory of the Literature of Art) This bibliography is a predecessor to BHA with coverage from 1975-1989. It includes abstracts and indexes on European and American art and architecture. Publication formats include books, periodicals, reviews, conference proceedings, exhibition catalogues, museum publications, and dissertations. RILA is also available in print volumes from 1991-1995 on the Hamon Index Table in Reference.
RAA (Repertoire d'Art et d'Archeologie) SMU Only The content of RAA is very similar to RILA with the exception that content coverage ends at 1939. RAA is only available online.
JSTOR SMU Only JSTOR is a collection of full-text journal articles containing a variety of disciplines including archeology, architecture and architectural history, and art and art history. Note that journal coverage is archival and not current. Coverage begins with the journal’s first issue to three to five years from the current issue. The basic search will allow searches by fields, types, dates, journal titles, or disciplines. Also available is browsing journal titles by discipline, such as Art and Art History.
Guide to the Literature of Art History 2 Z5931 .M374 2005 Updated edition of the Arntzen and Rainwater Guide to the Literature of Art History, the bibliography, edited by Max Marmor and Alex Ross, is organized by format, such as bibliography, and media. These categories are subdivided by period and country. The index provides a search by title and editor.

Biographical dictionary ranging in chronological coverage from antiquity to 20 th-century art. It also includes scholarly article entries on artists, bibliographies, and location of art works. Located in the Hamon Library Reference Collection.

A six-volume work that extends information contained in the Thieme-Becker biographical dictionary.
Dictionnaire critique et documentaire des peintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs et graveurs de tous les temps et de tous les pays par un groupe d'écrivains spécialistes français et étrangers N40 .B47 1999 Typical entry includes biography, chronology, description of the artists’ works, auction prices, signatures and museum collection information. Located in the Hamon Library Reference Collection.
Grove Dictionary of Art Online SMU Only From the 1996 print edition of The Grove Dictionary of Art, it contains over 45,000 articles on artists, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts, and photography and is updated with information quarterly. It also includes the Oxford Companion to Western Art. Topics can be browsed and are cross-referenced within articles. Many articles include a bibliography. Basic and advanced searches are available.
Dictionary of Women Artists N8354 .D53 1997 2-volume work with 600 alphabetical entries on many artists that include a brief biography, selected exhibitions, and bibliography in addition to a short analysis of the artist’s career and work. First volume includes introductory surveys of this history of women artists. Located in the Hamon Library Reference Collection.

A Short Guide to Writing About Art N7476 .B37 2000 Topics covered briefly in this guide are elements to consider for effective writing, such as analysis or comparison, style, criticism, approaches to research and bibliography guides. Located in the Hamon Library Reference Collection.
Art Information: Research Methods and Resources N85 .J64 1999 A guide to organizing a research strategy, and finding and using art information resources with an emphasis on methodology. It is organized in two large sections - Section A: Methodology and Section B: A Bibliography of Research Sources. The author also includes a brief how-to-use guide for different levels of scholarship from beginners to advanced. Located in the Hamon Library Reference Collection.

Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography 2 vols. N7565 .E53 1998 Primarily using biblical, mythological, and literary sources, the essays in this encyclopedia discuss themes depicted in iconographic narratives throughout the history of art. Provided at the end of each of the alphabetical entries is a selected list of works of art and a bibliography. Located in the Hamon Library Reference Collection.

Image Collections
Art Catalogues This collection of primarily Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Sotheby Parke Bernet catalogues is not in the PONI catalogue, but they can be located by browsing for the auction house name and date of sale. Citation information about an auction sale will often have the name of the auction house, city, date of sale and the lot number. An auction may include objects from one or more artists, or it may cover a time period or genre. Located in the Hamon Library Reference Collection.
ArtSTOR SMU Only Image database begun by the Mellon Foundation of over 300,000 digital images covering a variety of time periods and cultures. Coverage includes architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design, as well as many other forms of visual culture. Users can search, view, and download images. Search options include browse, basic and advanced search. Registered users can use several tools available in ARTstor for saving and printing images, or creating slide shows for class presentations.
Artnet.com
International in scope, this website is a gallery network with works from over 1,000 galleries representing over 25,000 artists. The categories that can be searched for images and information on artwork available in the current market are artists, galleries or gallery exhibitions. SMU libraries do not have a subscription to the website for its Price Database, however students can freely search it to see the works of international artists for sale by galleries and the approximate values. Artists can either be searched by name or browsed by the alphabetical title list.
