EHRAF Collection of Ethnography SMU ONLY
EHRAF Collection of Ethnography is produced by the Human Relations Area Files, Inc. (HRAF) at Yale University. It contains a variety of information types (e.g. articles, books) and provides overviews of cultures on general topics such as demography, economy, and social organization. You can browse a single culture or search across cultures.

This 4-volume set is a comprehensive encyclopedia of world history. Articles trace the development of human history with particular focus on area studies, anthropology, and cultural studies.
International Dictionary of Anthropologists GN20 .I4 1991
This is both a biographical and bibliographical dictionary. Entries discuss individuals as authors and as subjects. Covers all 4 fields of anthropology with broadly international coverage. Unusually, it includes not only academics, but also travelers, missionaries, administrators, and others.
Companion Encyclopedia of Anthropology: Humanity, Culture and Social Life GN25 .C65 1994
This collection reviews of some of the main subfields of anthropology with recommendations for further reading. It covers aspects of physical, cultural, and social anthropology as well as linguistics. However it does not cover archaeology or medical anthropology.

Cultural Anthropology

Coverage is limited to social and cultural anthropology. This dictionary includes entries on technical terms (and their history) as well as on areas of inquiry in the field, (e.g."ethnoecology," "feminist anthropology"). Extensive internal cross-referencing to other entries as well as to a select bibliography of recommended readings.
Biographical Dictionary of Social and Cultural Anthropology GN20 .B565 2004
More up-to-date, this volume is good companion to the International Dictionary of Anthropologists. It is less international in its coverage, but provides more detail on social and cultural anthropologists.

This 4-volume set is arranged by major concepts within the field of cultural anthropology. It has a thorough index, useful for finding information by name or related terms. Entries vary in length, but all include a bibliography.

This 10-volume set is arranged geographically and provides information on specific cultural groups. It is simple to locate relevant entries by group or language name with the index if you aren't sure of the geographic region. Entries include a brief history and demographic overview of the culture with discussion of their social structures including political organization, kinship, religion, and economy.
