Access Information
- Internet (General Access)
- These resources are freely available to anyone with Internet
access.
- Internet (Password Required, Contact
Librarian)
- These resources require a password. They are generally restricted to
valid SMU students, faculty, and staff. Please contact a reference
librarian for access.
- Internet (Valid SMU students/faculty staff)
- These resources are available on- or off-campus to valid SMU
students, faculty, and staff. Access to these resources requires a
14-digit library barcode number.
- Internet (SMU campus and valid SMU
students/faculty/staff)
- These resources are available from any computer on the SMU campus.
In addition, valid SMU students, faculty, and staff who are located
off-campus have access by using their 14-digit library barcode number.
- Internet (SMU campus computers and PPP dial-up
only)
- These resources are available from any computer on the SMU campus
and to SMU students, faculty, and staff who connect to the Internet
using Information Technology Services' (ITS)
dial-up PPP service.
- SMU Libraries Local Area Network
- CD-ROM network resources are available from any computer on the SMU
campus but require the ICA plug-in to be installed with the browser. In
addition, valid SMU students, faculty, and staff who are located
off-campus have access by using their 14-digit library barcode number.
First time users of a networked CD-ROM title will be prompted to
download an ICA client in order to access the Citrix server.
Instructions for downloading and installing the client are available at
http://www.smu.edu/libraries/citrix-help/pc/index-pc.html (for PC
users) and
http://www.smu.edu/libraries/citrix-help/mac/index-mac.html (for
Macintosh users). Subsequent uses of a networked CD-ROM title will not
require downloading the ICA client again. Please contact the ITS HELP
desk (214-768-4357 or
help@mail.smu.edu) if you need assistance with downloading and
installing the ICA client. All public computers in the Central
University Libraries already have the ICA plug-in installed.
Electronic Journal Title or ISSN Search
- The A-to-Z title search looks only for journal titles. It does not
search journal content.
- Title begins with
- This is the default search. Enter 2 or more letters of the beginning
of the title. The more letters you enter, the more specific the search.
Initial articles (the, a, an, etc.) are ignored by the search engine. No
wildcards or truncation characters are needed or valid in this search.
- Example: A search for educat will find all titles that begin
with that string, such as "Educating for employment," "Education and the
law," and "Educational assessment."
- Title equals
- Enter the exact title. Initial articles (the, a, an, etc.) are
ignored by the search engine. No wildcards or truncation characters are
needed or valid in this search.
- Example: A search for The New York Times will find "New York
Times."
- Title contains all words
- Enter one or more title words in any order. This search will match
titles that contain all words. You can use an asterisk (*) to find
partial words (e.g. neuro*).
- Example: A search for educa* ann* will find "American annals
of education," "Information technology in childhood education annual"
and "Educational foundations (Ann Arbor, Mich.)."
Updates
Index title and subject lists are are regenerated every Friday
(except University
holidays).
Electronic journal information is updated daily.

- "SMU Online Resources" is a collection of indexes, databases,
reference sources, electronic journals, and online government
information provided by Southern Methodist University libraries. The
participating libraries are Bridwell Library (Perkins School of
Theology), Business Information Center (Cox School of Business), and
Central University Libraries (includes DeGolyer Library, Fondren
Library, Fort Burgwin Library, Hamon Arts Library, Institute for the
Study of Earth and Man Reading Room, Norwick Center for Media and
Instructional Technology, Science/Engineering Library, and SMU-in-Legacy
Library). This service, made available to SMU users for the first time
in Fall 2000, was developed and is updated by SMU librarians.
