| DIVISION NEWS Welcome to Hamon, Amy! Amy Turner began her new position as Film, Theatre, and Communications Librarian on Wednesday, December 13th. Her M.A. in Film Studies from Pennsylvania State, M.L.S. from TWU, and her extensive years of library experience are a tremendous asset to the Hamon as we expand our service to the Meadows School of Arts. Though she will be missed at Fondren, we are certainly excited to welcome her to the Hamon. Her new phone extension will be 8-1856. Alisa Rata |
| STAFF NEWS Congratulations to Dawn Youngblood!!! GEOSCAPE'S BEST PAPER OF THE YEAR AWARD It is with great pleasure and excitement that Co-Editors Paige G. Andrew and Mary Lynette Larsgaard announce that the winner of the Geoscapes Best Paper of the Year Award for volume 2 of the Journal of Map and Geography Libraries/Geoscapes is Dr. Dawn Youngblood for her article, “Map Use Across the Disciplines,” which appears on pages 33-66 of issue number 2. Dawn’s article was unanimously selected as the best article – from eight articles published in volume two - by a panel from the journal’s Editorial Board. Dr. Youngblood is in charge of the Edwin J. Foscue Map Library at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. This overview article about the need for, and subsequent use of, maps in many different disciplines is especially outstanding for its depth of research, the obvious substantial amount of time invested in researching the topic, and particularly the finely-tuned eye of the author. It is well thought out, well researched (using both print and conversations with users), and well written, and makes excellent use of illustrations. The curiosity of the professional librarian that looks to the material available with the researcher always in mind makes for an engaging style. Because Dawn has a doctorate in archaeology, the section of the article that deals with that profession’s extensive use of maps is especially telling. The Awards Committee found that this article relates well to developments within the map and geography field, and perceives that it will be a standard “read” for incoming map librarians. As winner of the Geoscapes Best Paper of the Year Award, Dawn will receive a complimentary subscription to the journal, a $100 Haworth Press gift certificate and a framed award certificate. In addition, Haworth will present, in Dawn’s name, a complimentary two-year international subscription to the journal to an in-need center that would otherwise not be able to afford to subscribe to the journal. Book or website you would like to recommend: The last book I read was “Aerodynamics: how physics applies to flight.”, so I guess that would be a bad example. Other than that I can definitely recommend Alexander William McCall’s “44 Scotland Street”. It’s about human life in all aspects, humor and relationships between very different people that highlight the very nature of who we are. – Funny, charming and original.
