NEWS FROM CAROL BAKER I have taken up kayaking on White Rock Lake. I recently purchased a bright red (of course) Wilderness Pungo Classic 12 kayak. Note the SMU Mustang proudly displayed on the starboard bow. Next will be the name "Peruna" on the back (stern) of the boat. It has been properly christened with champagne. Thanks to Mike and Robin Stovall for introducing me to this wonderful sport! Now, if we can only get Billie into a kayak.....!

CONGRATS! Sandra Setnick's son Benjamin has been accepted into the SMU Evening Law program and will begin attending this fall. Sandra is relieved that he turned out OK after all, and she is a very proud Mom. Benjamin had this to say: "I'm still a bit overwhelmed as this is a big decision, committing the next four years to full time work and part time school. I know that the support of my friends and family have gotten me this far, and will get me through this as well." |

WAY TO GO! Claire Lattimore of CIP has been given the Tau Cross and Crown award by the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. It is for her many years of volunteer service. It was a surprise ceremony held to honor her years of dedicated service, which included serving on committees such as the vestry, altar guild, and the habitat for humanity group. Here is what Claire had to say: "The one thing I haven't done is work in the library! Well, I did for a very short time but decided that I did not want to volunteer to do the same thing I did at work! I do volunteer once a month at our bookstore, that's about the closest to books that I get. I also am on a team that serves food at the Austin Street Shelter (homeless shelter) once a quarter; have helped with 3 Habitat Houses (they let me pick up bent nails at one site); and serve on the Church's Wedding Guild (I make sure the groom steps out when he is supposed to) and thus may hold some sort of record for number of weddings attended! I'm also co-convener of our Women's Book Group that is reading Nickled and Dimed for our August meeting." She jokingly added that although it is a cumulative award, her fellow church members reminded her that she is not absolved of continuing service in the future. |

This is a new section in which a CUL staff member will be featured each month. The purpose is to get to know each other a little better. Please feel free to send me the profiles of your newest staff members (tvangoet@mail.smu.edu) so that we can introduce them to the rest of CUL. If you have a staff member in your area that you would like to nominate (new or old) please contact me. (You can even volunteer yourself :) ) |

FUN STUFF FISH STORY FROM WICHITA EAGLE NEWSPAPER (May 30, 2004) This was a pretty interesting story from The Sunday Wichita Eagle Newspaper a couple of weeks ago. Was in a housing subdivision around 119th st. South and Maple. Anyhow a resident in the area saw a ball bouncing around kind of strange like in the subdivision's pond and when he went to investigate, it was a flathead catfish who had obviously tried to swallow a child's basketball which became stuck in its mouth. The fish was totally exhausted from trying to dive but unable to because the ball would always bring him back up to the surface. The resident tried numerous times to get the ball out but was unsuccessful. He finally had his wife cut the ball in order to deflate the ball and release the catfish.
