Bridwell Library 50th Anniversary Celebration
Thursday February 8, 3:00-6:00 pm, Bridwell Library
Bridwell Library of the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist
University will be 50 years old on February 8, 2001. In its first half century Bridwell Library has gained a reputation
as one of the country's finest theological and rare book libraries. An anniversary exhibition opening on February 8, 2001 offers
a history of the Library and its collections, highlighting some of the most notable books, benefactors, and bibliophiles associated
with Bridwell over the past fifty years. The public is cordially invited
to join in the celebration at Bridwell Library on February 8, 2001, beginning
at 3:00 p.m. with a service of thanksgiving in the Perkins Chapel, followed
by a reception from 3:30-6 p.m. in Bridwell Library. Special tours of the
Library will also be offered throughout the day on February 8. For more

Friends Program: Martin Padget
Thursday, February 15, 6:00 pm, Texana Room, DeGolyer Library.
Friends of the SMU Libraries and the William P. Clements Center for
Southwest Studies present Martin Padget, the 2000-2001 recipient of the
Clements Research Fellowship in Southwestern history and professor of English
at the University of Wales. He will talk about his manuscript Indian
Country: Representing the Southwest, 1830-1937. It is an inter-disciplinary
study of Euro-American writing about the Southwest. In it, Padget
"examines how writers of frontier narratives, personal diaries, military
surveys, travelogues, ethnological reports, as well as fiction, poetry
and autobiography, mapped the region's natural features and human populations
from well before the Mexican War to the 1930s."

in Washington D.C., January 12-17. This is a brown bag lunch; drinks will
be provided.
CIP Cybercast Brown Bag Presentations
Thursdays, 12 noon-12:45pm, CIP Conference Room
In November 2000, the Library of Congress sponsored the Bicentennial
Conference on Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium: Confronting
the Challenges of Networked Resources and the Web. Leaders in the
cataloging community and beyond were invited, not “merely to convey or
update existing information but to frame the issues and fashion solutions
to problems.” The conference program, along with links to the presentations
is available online.
Please join the Bibliographic Control Team in the CIP conference room for
a series of informal “mini” brown bag lunches to view cybercasts of the
presentations. We will watch the 20 minute main presentation, then have
some time to view the 10 minute response (when available) and for discussion.
We will be meeting every Thursday from 12:00 to 12:45 for the next few
months. A weekly email reminder will be sent to CUL News with the conference
presentation title and relevant web links. For more information contact

| Public Service Announcement: Get Your Parking Ticket Canceled!
Five months after the September 2000 opening of the new Airline Parking Garage, DPS is beginning to enforce parking restrictions in the garage. Without warning, DPS recently began ticketing vehicles parked on the 2nd level without a Law parking permit. If you were one of the unlucky ones to have been ticketed in recent weeks, there's good news. If you have a sticker that allows you to park in the Airline garage and have been ticketed for parking on the wrong level, you can go to the SMU Police Department and have the ticket canceled. This is according to Parking Committee Chair Earl Weiskittel. However ... be warned: future parking violations will be enforced without mercy. Remember: Anyone with a valid SMU parking sticker may park on the third, fourth or fifth levels of the Airline Garage. The first level is reserved for visitors, faculty and staff. The second level is reserved for law students. The levels have been clearly marked with additional signage. Fondren-Science Government Documents and Microforms To Merge
Public Services staff are continuing the ongoing merge of Fondren Library Center services by working to merge government documents and periodicals collections. Our plan is to combine all CUL documents collections into one collection. We also plan on moving the periodicals office to the Periodicals Reading Area and all microforms to the area now occupied by Science & Engineering government documents. The periodicals office will be on the second floor in the office now occupied by Dave Schmidt. Dave’s binding work will be done in the Science & Engineering workroom.
All microforms--government document, Science & Engineering, and Fondren—will be placed in the stack area of Science & Engineering government documents. This area is well-lit. The microform reader/printers will be aligned along the mezzanine wall in the space currently occupied by Science & Engineering government documents. The area along this wall has different lighting than the stack area and is darker. Government documents will be combined by taking better advantage of existing floor space and by using storage areas more effectively. Most materials will be combined with the Fondren documents collections.
Our planned merger will enhance service in two departments which are now split. Patrons who are now forced to traverse from one end of the building to another will realize greater convenience and accessibility.

Linda Seller's office is temporarily housed in FLE 324, effective February
1, and will move again as part of a series of office shifts later in the
spring. The telephone number will remain the same.

Jane Elder will begin on Monday, February 12 as the Administrative Coordinator for Public Services. Jane is already a familiar face around CUL. She has worked in DeGolyer Library in several capacities (administrative assistant, assistant to the curator of manuscripts and photographs, research assistant) from 1983 to 1985 and 1987 to 1996. Jane earned her B.A. in History, B.F.A. in Journalism and her M.A. in history here at SMU. Since 1995, Jane has been the Associate Director of the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies. Jane has begun her MLS degree at TWU. Please join us in welcoming Jane back to Central University Libraries!

I have two publication credits to add under my name. The second
installment of my e-books column for the DALLAS MORNING NEWS appeared Sunday,
January 21, 2001, on page 10C of the Arts and Entertainment section ("Writers
and publishers are plugging in to electronic texts"). The article is also
available on-line for a limited time at: http://www.dallasnews.com/lifestyles/books/267334_bkcol_ebooks_2.html.
I've also begun contributing to an on-line quarterly journal, One Final
Note, dedicated, ahem, to "improvisation and all things related, including
but not limited to music known as free jazz, avant-garde jazz, new music,
Great Black Music, ecstatic jazz, etc." The Winter 2001 issue of

Fine Arts Librarian Brandon Pope has been awarded the Lois Swan
Jones Professional Development Award -- $500.00 for conference expenses
to the 2001 ARLIS/NA Conference in Los Angeles

Bridwell at 50: Books, Benefactors, and Bibliophiles
8 February through 2 June 2001, Bridwell Library
An anniversary exhibition opening on February 8, 2001 offers a history
of the Library and its collections, highlighting some of the most notable
books, benefactors, and bibliophiles associated with Bridwell over the
past fifty years. The exhibition "Bridwell at 50" tells the story of the
Library and the many friends who have sustained its tradition of excellence
and growth. On display are an array of treasures, including a biblical
papyrus, a large fragment of the Gutenberg Bible, the first English Bible
printed in America, the Library's rare Chinese Torah Scroll, medieval manuscripts,
graphic works by Dürer and Rembrandt, and books designed by Picasso
and Chagall.
Hamon Exhibition: Willard Clark: Santa Fe Printer/Printmaker
January 16-March 2, 2001, Hawn Gallery, Hamon Library
Willard Clark, master printer, created hundreds of prints and paintings
in the 82 years of his life (1910-1992). A resident of Santa Fe since 1928,
Clark addressed virtually all aspects of life in northern New Mexico.
David Farmer, Director of DeGolyer Library, curated the exhibition (which
opened at the Grace Museum in Abilene in September) and authored the accompanying
catalogue, Willard Clark: Printer & Printmaker.
Fondren Library Center Exhibits
The Books of the Millenium Exhibit will continue in the display cases
of Fondren Library Center through the end of February. A display of Little
Big Books will be on view in the exhibit cases by the west exit of Fondren
Library Center. The display, prepared by Dave Schmidt, is of a collection
donated to CUL by Bill and Patsy Zimmerman.
