Massages by Cecilia Aloi
Cecilia Aloi is back by popular demand to give neck & shoulder massages on Tue. May 16th & Wed. May 17th, from 9 am - 1 pm each day. 15 minute massages will cost $10, and tips are welcome. Sign-up for a time slot in the foyer of the CUL Office (FLE 300). Massages will be given in Fondren Library East rm. 402.

CUL Virtual Tour
Please contact Beth Walker (x83656) if you are interested in helping with the creation of a virtual web tour of Central University Libraries and services.  The project can use help with different aspects, but particularly needs someone with experience working with digital photgraphic images. The virtual tour will be completed by the end of this summer.

Bridwell Bibliophile Series: Bookbinding
Pam Leutz, SMU staff member, bookbinder, and proprietor of the Gilded Edge, will conduct a hands-on workshop on how to make an accordion binding, a versatile and whimsical binding technique. LEAD Program: The Art of Making Speeches
Bob Rasberry, professor of Organizational Behavior/Business Policy in Cox, will look at positive ways to improve the construction, practice and delivery of everyday presentations.  Emphasis will be on how to turn anxiety riden assignments into personal best experiences. Participants will be encouraged to be active participants in the learning process. WHEN: May 11, 10 - 11:30 am. WHERE: DeGolyer Library, Texana Rm.
 

DIVISION NEWS

ISEM Library had a great 'BOOK THING' in April.

The Hamon Arts Library recently hosted Selections from Pueblo Indian Pottery.  This show displayed 25 lithographs from PUEBLO INDIAN POTTERY, a two-volume, limited-edition portfolio, each volume containing fifty color plates, with an introduction and notes by Kenneth M. Chapman (1875-1968). Dr. Susan Bakewell curated the exhibition in collaboration with Ellen Niewyk and Sam Ratcliffe, staff of the Hamon's Bywaters Special Collections.

New Division Web Pages

OED Online Trial
Curt Holleman arranged trial access to the OED Online through AMIGOS until May 15.  The trial will likely be extended beyond that date, and then it is likely that we will begin a regular subscription. To access, go to the URL:  dictionary.oed.com and select the "Sign In" button on the left side of the screen.  This is a national trial, so access may be a little different for our institution when we go to a regular subscription sometime during the summer.  Please let Curt Holleman know if you have any questions/problems using OED Online.
 

STAFF NEWS

New Babies
Janet Asberry gave birth to a little girl, Aria Grace Fuller, on April 12. Coincidentally, Janet’s last day of work here at CUL was April 12.  The new family now resides in Austin, TX.

Sonia Graff and her husband Robert also have a new addition to their family.  Elias Graff was born February 18th, weight 9 lbs., length 21 inches.  Everyone is doing well, and Sonia will return to work in May.

Retirements
Norma Potter retired in April after 18 years of service in CIP.  She will continue her many outside activities and interests, such as volunteering at the new Meadows Museum on our campus.  We will miss her lovely spirit and creativity. Judy Abbott is retiring from CIP for the second time as of May 1st.  She graciously worked for us several additional months due to short staffing, but now wishes to return to one morning a week as a volunteer.

New Staff Member
On Monday, April 10th, Sola (pronounced Shola) Babatunde started working in CIP as a member of the Vendor Relations and Requisitions Teams. He is taking Joseph Milazzo's position. Sola has a law license in Nigeria. He plans a career in librarianship.

Notary Public Among Us!
We are now lucky enough to have a bona fide notary public within our ranks! Lisa Wall (NCMIT) has graciously taken on this responsibility.  If you have signatures to be witnessed, or documents to be certified, Lisa is the person to call.  She is located in CMIT, Room 100B FLW.  Her extension is x84397.

Weddings & Engagements
Kris Murphy (CIP) has announced her engagement to Guy Reed III. Sandra Setnick (SEL) is pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of her son Benjamin Setnick to Molly Ramsour (May 27th).  Molly is the granddaughter of Margaret Hamzey who retired as Head of Circulation in 1986.

Miscellaneous Announcements

Maria Bellavance has been elected Membership Chairman for the local chapter of Beta Phi Mu (Librarianship Honor Society). The assignment will be for two years.

Melanie Golder's daughter, Lindsay, received a "President's Award" scholarship to Bishop Lynch High School.  Her son, Bill, is graduating from Jesuit College Preparatory School.  He will not be attending UT-Austin afterall.  Instead, he will be attending Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.

Many of the library staff will remember Marna Morland who worked in CIP, was then Periodicals Librarian for Fondren Library.  This month Marna and her husband Lawrence have returned to live and work in the Dallas area with their young son, William.
 
 

EXHIBITS

Recognition of Faculty Authorship, Editorship, and Artistic Works. From now through May 20 Fondren Library Center will display a collection of books, journals, papers, and music published or produced by SMU faculty in 1999. Faculty who published were honored at a special reception in the Fondren Library Center on April 26th.

Charles DeBus: New Work. From April 27-September 4, the Mildred Hawn Gallery in SMU's Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts Library will be the venue for "Charles DeBus: New Work." Professor DeBus, who has taught in the Division of Art since 1975, describes these twenty-two photographs as follows: "These prints are made with alternative photographic processes using found objects and photographic negatives with the addition of drawing and color. Technically, I am attempting to create new realities.  Sometimes there is an ambiguity of space or perspective but I am always trying to make feathers float or sway, the moon to shine and plants to glow with life.  It is my hope that these images bring to the viewer the myths and folk tales asleep in the hearts of all."

Books of the Millenium. On display in the Fondren Library Center from March 15 through May 31 are the selections of Student Body President Frank White and CUL Librarian Gillian McCombs. Frank White selected "Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin; Gillian McCombs selected "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare. Also on display are their essays on why they believe their selections had the most influence in the last millenium.

DeGolyer Library Manuscripts. On 19 May DeGolyer Library will open an exhibition that highlights the variety of
manuscript materials it holds.  This exhibit will draw from the papers of Everette L. DeGolyer, J. Frank Dobie, Elizabeth Ann
McMurray, the Vulclain papers, the Stanley Marcus Collection, the Erik Jonsson Collection, and the Horton Foote Archive,
among many others.  This exhibition is being mounted to welcome the American Manuscript Society to Texas in May.
Members of the Society will visit DeGolyer Library and then make their way to UT-Arlington, the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor, and libraries and private manuscript collections in Austin and San Antonio on a ten-day tour. WHEN: May 19 - June.

Library is hosting an exhibition on the art of the Passover Haggadah from the treasures of the Klau Library at Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. These illuminated Haggadahs date from the 15th c. to the 20th c. WHEN:
