Bridwell Library announces The Second Helen Warren DeGolyer Triennial
Exhibition & Award for American Bookbinding to take place in conjunction
with a national conference at Bridwell Library, June 15-17, 2000. The exhibition
is a juried show drawn from a competition to design a binding for an important
book in Bridwell's collections. The book for the second Triennial competition
is the first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses--a seminal work, recently
named the most significant book of the twentieth century. Each participating
binder has submitted one binding as a sample of his/her work, as well as
an original design for Joyce's Ulysses. The First Prize, which will
be announced at the opening of the exhibition on June 16, 2000, is a $5,000.00
commission to bind the book for Bridwell Library. Other prizes will also
be awarded on that evening. The exhibition consists of both the sample

| DIVISION NEWS |
At the end of each semester, in June, September, and January, the CUL Staff Newsletter will include "Division Reports" which summarize news and events in each area for the entire semester. Here are the Division Reports for Spring 2000.
CUL Office
Since August, 1999 CUL has been developing a new strategic plan to
chart our course for the next 5 years. In January 2000, staff,
students, and faculty were invited to participate in focus groups.
The focus groups' charge was to reflect and comment on the work drafted
by the Strategic Planning Committee. The focus groups' comments
were forwarded to the Strategic Planning Committee and, where there was
consensus, the Strategic PlanningCommittee synthesized those comments and
changes into the strategic planning documents. We are now in the process
of finalizing the strategic plan, with additional focus groups coming up
in June.

Charles DeBus: New Work. Through
September 4, the Mildred Hawn Gallery in SMU's Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts
Library will be the venue for "Charles DeBus: New Work." Professor DeBus,
who has taught in the Division of Art since 1975, describes these twenty-two
photographs as follows: "These prints are made with alternative photographic
processes using found objects and photographic negatives with the addition
of drawing and color. Technically, I am attempting to create new realities.
Sometimes there is an ambiguity of space or perspective but I am always
trying to make feathers float or sway, the moon to shine and plants to
glow with life. It is my hope that these images bring to the viewer
the myths and folk tales asleep in the hearts of all."
