3rd Annual Hamon Library Open House
On August 22, the Hamon Arts Library will be hosting the 3rd Annual Open House in the Hamon Arts Library.  The reception will be in the Hawn Conference Room from 2PM to 4PM.  The Open House will give new and returning students, faculty and staff the opportunity to tour the library collections and meet the Hamon staff.  Additionally, there will be refreshments and door prizes.

LEAD Brown Bag: Student Hiring
Tammy Sherwood (CUL Office) and Cindy Olson (FLC Circulation) will present an info session on student hiring issues such as job advertising, recruitment, hiring procedures, the paperwork path, and retention. DIVISION NEWS

TX-OK Boundary Agreement Signed at DeGolyer
On July 28th at 11:00am in the DeGolyer Library's Texana Room, the Texoma Area Boundary Agreement was signed. Texas Land Commissioner David Dewhurst and Oklahoma Rep. James Dunegan signed this agreement, the final action needed
to resolve Texas' long-running Red River boundary dispute with Oklahoma. Various other senators and congressmen were present to witness this historic event.

New FLC Periodicals Reading Room in Preparation
The mezzanine level of the Science/Engineering Library is being transformed into the new Fondren Library Center Newspaper and Periodicals Reading Area. At the end of July, after all reference materials had been moved to Fondren reference room, the mezzanine was cleaned up and the floor refinished. The transfer of journals and newspapers from the Fondren periodicals office is planned for August, to be completed before the start of the Fall semester.
 

STAFF NEWS

New Staff
Please join us in welcoming Dawn Youngblood to CUL.  Dawn will be working in the Edwin J. Foscue Map Library which is part of the Science and Engineering Library.  Her first day of work will be August 1.

Alicia Snee to Depart CUL
We have a happy announcement to make for one of the Hamon's own -- alas, it is a sad note for the Hamon.  Alicia Snee has accepted the position of Fine Arts Librarian (music, theatre, dance, art, and design) at California State University, Sacramento.  Her last day at SMU will be September 8. Join us in wishing Alicia all the best in her new position.
 

In the Spotlight:  Melanie Lenhart Melanie Lenhart joined CIP June 19th.  She discovered the available position in CIP while searching the web, but it was marriage that brought Melanie back to Dallas from College Station last October.  Melanie met her husband, Isaac, in high school when they both lived in the Colony. They have known each other for 11 years, but only began dating the past year. This was a long distance relationship as Melanie was living in College Station and Isaac was in Dallas.  Melanie and Isaac married in November.  Isaac is in web development with Network Associates, working with McAfee Virus. Melanie is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in English, minoring in French.  She worked for a year after graduation in the Cushing Memorial Library, special collections at Texas A&M. She is currently enrolled in library school at TWU.  Her interests in library science center on Cataloging with its mathematical precision and Collection Preservation.  Melanie has just started designing and making jewelry.  She is a member of the Dallas Gem and Mineral Show, and hopes one day to sell her work.  She has two cats, Dobyn, a Turkish Van who unlike most cats loves water and an American shorthair named Cleo.  Melanie is also interested in aromatherapy; she says lavender is reported to solve any problem, to be a cure-all.  Melanie’s office is in the CIP department, FLE Room 4.  You can reach her by phone at 8-3592 or by email at mlenhart@mail.smu.edu.

Jan Buford (SEL-IIS) was blessed with the July 7th birth of her second grandchild, Tanner Mackenzie Buford,  to her son Rick and his wife Lorie. Tanner weighed in at 7 lbs 13 oz.

Maria Bellavance (CIP) shares this about her holiday in June:  ‘I am back from a great vacation in Portugal.  The weather was gorgeous and the ocean surf fantastic.  I had fun in the waves.’

Movie Palace Memories: Dallas and Beyond

The Fondren Library Center Exhibit Committee invites you to view an exhibit of Dallas and general theater memorabilia put together by Troy Sherrod, Fondren Periodicals Department.  The exhibit continues our effort this summer to highlight staff in the libraries. Troy describes the exhibit as follows:

Once upon a time, in the not so distant past, there were places where we could become kings and hold court in exotic palaces of fantasy where troubles melt like lemon drops.  We traveled to faraway lands, and sat amidst the celestial watching stars glimmering high above. We could, for at least two hours, escape the woes of poverty, war or whatever else ailed us, eyes transfixed upon a silver screen while surrounded by ultimate beauty and luxury, all for about a dime.

This exhibit focuses on photos and memorabilia from the golden age of movie theatres. It centers on Dallas, but also includes other notable U.S. theatres.  The collection began soon after my early childhood visits to the downtown theatres, and the stories my grandmother told about the glory days on Elm Street.

Fine Press Book Display in DeGolyer
During the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, California was a center for private press books and fine handbindings. The DeGolyer Library is currently displaying four books from one of these binderies, the Artemisia Bindery, a handbindery operated by Idah Meacham Strobridge during the early 20th century in California. Strobridge, the author of numerous periodical articles, established the Artemisia Bindery where she published, handbound, and sold both her own works and those of other authors. Some of the books displayed feature unique illustrations, often by such well-known artists of this period as Maynard Dixon. The exhibit, which is located in the foyer of the DeGolyer Library, will remain through August of 2000.
