Computing facilities
- The Information Commons @ Fondren Library Center has 50 computers with Internet and Microsoft Office . This area is open whenever the Fondren Library Center is open. Users must have an SMU ID card after 10pm. If there are more users than there are available computers, SMU students will be given first priority.
- The ACS Labs in Fondren Library Center offer a greater variety of software, including several graphics packages. Admittance to these labs is by SMU ID only.
- The computer lab in the basement of the Hamon Arts Library is open for use by the SMU community when not in use for scheduled classes.
-
Access the the network (wireless or ethernet) with your laptop
- Wireless network access is available in the libraries. Please consult this FAQ and use this guide to set up your laptop for wireless access.
- In Fondren Library Center, you may request an ethernet cable at the circulation desk to use to in the ethernet connections on the second floor of the Fondren Library Center just above the lobby.

Log in to resources
- All current SMU students (undergraduates and graduates enrolled in credit-bearing coursework) staff, and faculty are eligible to use SMU's subscription databases from off-campus. Access to most library subscription databases is restricted by license to the SMU IP-address range. Students, faculty and staff who want to access databases from off-campus may:
- Online resources having the location "Internet (SMU campus computers and PPP dial-up only)" are available only if you are using PPP software connected to SMU's network.
- Browse our online resources by using the SMU Online Resources pages. When you access a resource from off-campus using a commercial Internet provider, you will be asked to enter your last name and your 14-digit library barcode number. This number can be found on your ID card and begins with "22177".
Online resources with the access/location phrase of "Internet (SMU campus and valid SMU students/faculty/staff)" can be accessed from off-campus if you have Internet service from any Internet provider. Online resources having the location "Internet (SMU campus computers and PPP dial-up only)" are available only if you are using PPP software to connect to SMU's network.
- Subscription resources for which SMU does not have IP-address restricted access require user names and passwords. The SMU Libraries Reference staff will supply user names and passwords as needed to currently enrolled students, faculty and staff. Those who need user names and passwords should be prepared to show their SMU ID to library staff or give their ID number when requesting by e-mail or telephone.
- PONI catalog log-ins (for recalls, renewals, etc.) require the 14-digit library barcode number and last name from a valid SMU ID card.
Printing from computers
- Computers in the libraries and computer labs are networked to laser printers. A print management system allows you to send a named print job to the printers. The job will remain in the system's queue for two hours, after which it will be deleted. No password is required for printing.
- Printing must be paid for with a copy card or the Express Cash on an SMU ID card.
- Black and white prints are 10 cents each. Color prints are 50 cents each. Color printing is not available at all locations.
Photocopying
- Black and white photocopiers are available throughout the libraries. There are no color copiers in the libraries.
- Copies are 10 cents per page. A limited number of copiers will accept cash payment. Most copiers require a copy card or or the Express Cash on an SMU ID card for payment.
- DeGolyer Library has special provisions for photocopying. See their access information.
- For color copying and other services, please see Images.
Copy/print cards
- Almost all printing and photocopying devices in the libraries require the use of a copy card or the Express Cash on an SMU ID card for payment.
- A copy card can be purchased at Images in Hughes-Trigg or at card vending machines in Fondren Library Center and Hamon Arts Library.
- A completely blank copy card is $1.00. If purchased from a vending machine, a single dollar bill is required. After purchase, value may be added to the card with $1, $5, $10, or $20 bills. Vending machines do not accept change.
- Express Cash on an SMU ID card is good for both photocopying and printing (as well as vending machines, Market purchases, and many other things). Copy card vending machines can be used to add Express Cash to an ID card. To add value to an Express Cash account with a credit card, go to the Pony Express site and look for Manage My Account.
