Many unfamiliar medieval names or terms are defined in this resource. It covers roughly A.D. 500 to 1500 and is limited to the areas of the Latin West, the Slavic world, Asia Minor, the lands of the caliphate in the East, and the Muslim-Christian areas of North Africa. Many of the entries include a bibliography for further research. - Fenlon, Iain. Early Music History. New York, 1981. Hamon Reserve: ML169.8 .E15 1981 This is an important resource for determining what kind of research has been done in this area. It is published every year and contains several essays per year. There are currently 15 volumes in the set, so it would be simple and beneficial to browse through the volumes to see the various topics covered. - Early Music. London, 1973-. Hamon Periodicals This periodical also contains essays, but includes reviews, obituaries, and advertisements for instrument makers and recordings. It is published quarterly and is also easily browsed. You will find references to articles from this publication in Music Index and RILM. - Switten, Margaret Louise. Music and Poetry in the Middle Ages: A Guide to Research on French and Occitan Song, 1100-1400. New York, 1995. Hamon Reference: ML128 .M3S9 1995 Note: French refers to the Trouveres and Occitan to the Troubadours. This book takes a closer look at the relationship between music and poetry. Its primary focus is on secular songs and provides a background of research, bibliography, discography, and an index of poets, composers, theorists, and songs.
