About The Collection
Who Can Check Out Maps?
Faculty and graduate students may check out maps, but anyone is welcome to come in and use the collection within the library.
A Guide To Maps In The Edwin J. Foscue map library
More than one quarter of a million maps are currently available for use in the Edwin J. Foscue Map Library.
Below is a partial list of the types of maps that we maintain. Much of our collection is updated regularly so that the latest version of any map is available to patrons. As a U.S. Government Map Depository, we receive approximately 1,800 new maps annually. Additionally, a fair volume of new maps and atlases are purchased or donated annually. Although cataloging of maps is an ongoing project, only a fraction of the holding records are currently available through PONI.
Types of maps in the collection include:
1) Topographic Maps
2) Geological Maps
3) Aeronautical Navigation Charts
4) Nautical Navigation Charts
5) Soil Surveys
6) Aerial Photographs
7) National and International Atlases
8) Historic Charts, Maps, and Posters
How The Collection Is Arranged
The vast majority of map library materials are organized via the Library of Congress system.
Most Library of Congress map codes begin with "G" for Geography. Many end in a lower case "s" which indicates it is part of a series. Below is an overview of the Library of Congress "G" number codes to help you browse in your area of interest.
