Background Information

History Of The Department

SMU's Fondren Library has been serving Dallas as a selective federal depository since 1925. In partnership with the Government Printing Office or GPO, the Government Information and Map Resources Department serves not only the SMU Campus, but also the residents of the 32nd Congressional District and the general public. The collection is housed in the Fondren Library Center and the Underwood Law Library.

At various times in its history, SMU has also participated in special depository arrangements with such federal agencies as the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), the Army Mapping Service or AMS (later, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency or NIMA, now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency or NGA), NASA, and the Department of Energy (DOE).

Fondren Library has also been a partner in the Texas State Publications Depository Program since that program was established in 1976.
