Computers

The Information Commons @ Fondren Library Center (1st Floor, Fondren Library East, see library floorplans) is an integrated information service environment meeting the learning and research needs of library users by providing a wide range of technology and information support. SMU students, faculty, and staff may present their Pony Express (SMU ID) card to use the computer labs in rooms 108 and 109 of the Information Commons @ Fondren Library Center. The lab PCs are equipped with a wide range of hardware and software. Computers for public use (no SMU ID required) are located on every floor in Fondren Library Center. Public use computers located in the Information Commons @ Fondren Library Center provide Internet browsers, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. All other PCs throughout the complex also have Internet browsers but only Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint viewers. All PCs for public use run either the Windows98 or WindowsXP operating system. Public use computers are equipped with security software to prevent hardware and software configuration changes. Users should save to diskette or email any needed documents. Re-starting the public PCs erases any documents saved to the PC's hard drive. The University's Computing and Communications Policy governs the use of computers and networks on the SMU campus. Local policies of the Information Commons @ Fondren Library Center are posted near those PCs.

Printing from Computers

The UnipriNT vended printing system is configured for all computers in Fondren Library Center. Users will be prompted to enter a name for every print job and must then retrieve their prints using a copy card or their Pony Express card from one of four print stations. Print jobs remain in the queue for up to two hours or until they are released (purchased). Print jobs from all public PCs on the first, second, third, and fourth floors of Fondren Library East and the PCs in Fondren Library Center lobby may be released at either of the two print stations located near the Reference Desk on the first floor of Fondren Library East. Print jobs from the public computers in the Science/Engineering wing must be released from the print station located on the mezzanine in that building. Print jobs from the labs in rooms 108 and 109 of the Information Commons @ Fondren Library Center must be released from the print stations adjacent to the area. Users in the labs have the option of selecting a color or black & white laser printer. All black & white prints purchased through the UnipriNT system cost $0.10 each. Color prints are $0.50 each.

Copy Cards

Copy cards may be purchased from Images using credit cards, checks, cash, or a Pony Express account (SMU ID-holders only). SMU users who have a Pony Express card may also ask Images staff to activate that card for printing and copying instead of purchasing a copy card. Two copy card vending machines are located in the Information Commons @ Fondren Library Center (1st Floor, Fondren Library East). To purchase a copy card from the vending machines, insert a one-dollar bill (no coins or larger bills are permitted when buying the card). The card comes with $0.00 copy credit and must be re-inserted into the vending machine and at least $1.00 added. Copy cards may be credited with coins or bills at the photocopiers with coin/bill towers. Photocopies cost $0.09 each when purchased with copy cards. Copies purchased with coins/bills at the photocopiers cost $0.15 each. Copy cards are required for purchasing print jobs sent from public printers in Fondren Library Center. Computer print jobs are $0.10 per page.

Photocopiers

The campus' copier service is managed by Images, a graphic and print resource service provider under the direction of SMU Auxiliary Services. Images' office is located in the basement of Clements Hall (see campus maps). Service desk hours are 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Friday during the spring and fall semesters. Hours may vary during the summer and between semesters. Phone: 214-768-3898.
