About Collection Development

Collection development is the responsibility of librarians whose principal duties are collection analysis and the selection and preservation of materials. The amount of money each department spends is based on factors such as the degrees offered by the department, enrollment, funds raised by the department in support of library purchases, funds given by donors in support of specific subject areas, and the relative cost of collecting in the subject areas of the department.

Faculty are encouraged to submit requests through their faculty library representative to the Collection Development Office (Room 302 in Fondren, see library floorplan) or to the appropriate librarian (see telephone numbers below).

Faculty requests. Each department names a library representative, who forwards materials requests and communicates the needs of the department to the library. Requests should include as much bibliographic information as possible: author, title, edition, publisher, date of publication, and price. However, detailed bibliographic information is not necessary. Order cards for submitting requests are available from the departmental representative or from the libraries. Faculty members in the humanities and social sciences may call the CUL collection development office (214-768-2324) with special requests for materials or questions about the collection development process. Those in art, art history, arts administration, cinema-television, dance, music and theater may call the Reference Department in Hamon Library at 214-768-2796. Those in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics may call the collection development office in the Science and Engineering Library at 214-768-1370.
