Circulation - Policies for SMU TexShare Borrowers

The TexShare Card Program allows public library users, undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff of participating TexShare institutions to have direct, personal access to library materials at SMU. A TexShare card from the borrower's institution and University ID is required to be eligible for a SMU library card. Borrowers must be identified as graduate students, undergraduate students, staff, faculty, or public library users.

Borrower Privileges

Texshare borrowers may check out regular, non-reserve books from the Central University Libraries.

Texshare cardholders may use some computer databases in the Central University Libraries unless licensing agreements with database manufactures limit access to SMU students, faculty and staff only. Ask at the Reference Desk of any Central University Library about databases accessible to visitors.

Interlibrary Loan and mediated searches of online databases are not available to Texshare borrowers.

Borrower Responsibilities

As a library borrower, you are responsible for:

Card Validity

Cards issued by the Fondren Library Center Circulation Desk are valid at the Central University Libraries and Bridwell Theology Library only. Fondren Library Center entry is restricted to SMU ID only after 10:00pm. Once the Texshare card expires, the borrower must obtain a current Texshare card from their institution in order to renew their card.

Loan Periods

Faculty, Staff, Graduate Students: 3 weeks, (1 renewal)

Undergraduate and Public Library Patrons: 3 days, (no renewals)

Maximum Number of Items Loaned at a Given Time

Graduate Students-5 items

Faculty and Staff-10 items

Undergraduate Students-1 item

Public Library patrons-1 item

Renewals/Holds

If materials are in a category which allows renewal, borrowers may renew items if there are no holds or recalls on the items. In order to return or renew items, the borrower must bring the items to the library from which they were originally checked out. Texshare borrowers are not eligible to place holds or recalls on materials.

Fines

The fee schedule for all guest borrowers is $1.00 per day per item.  Fines may be paid at the Fondren Library Center--Circulation desk via check or cash.

Lost Items

When an item is overdue one month, the borrower will be billed a replacement cost of $50.00, a $25.00 processing fee and a $30.00 maximum library fee. If the item is returned, the replacement cost and processing fee will be refunded.

Blocking Borrowing Privileges

The Libraries' computer-based circulation system will suspend borrowing privileges for: 1 overdue item $1 overdue fine if the maximum allowed items charged out at any one time is reached if the library card is expired if the library card is reported lost or stolen.
