Tagging of title added entries | Initial Articles | Indicators
Subfield i | Subfield a | Subfield b | Quick Reference List
Since the implementation of format integration (January 1995), title added entries are tagged in three different ways:
· 246 Variant titles associated with the item, whether or not the title(s) appears on the item.
· 730 Uniform titles entered as an added entry, rather than main entry (130 or 240); these headings are under authority control.
· 740 Uncontrolled titles (these titles are not under authority control) for:
1) independent works (analytics) contained within an item (e.g., two or more plays, short stories, etc. bound together; or, for titles listed in contents notes);
2) added entries for titles of related publications external to the item (e.g., when a book is accompanied by another item (workbook, supplement, etc.) with a different title)
Do not include initial articles in any of the sub-fields of the 246. Unlike the 245, there is no indicator for non-filing characters for the 246. Do not enter punctuation at the end of the field unless the field ends with an abbreviation.
1st indicator controls printing/display. Even though its coding is irrelevant for OPAC display, code it appropriately.
2nd indicator represents the source of the title in field 246--not the source of the title in the 245. It is used in place of a 500 note and determines the OPAC display constant (introductory phrase such as Cover title) which precedes the text in the field. See table below.
1st INDICATOR
0 note, no title added entry
1 note, title added entry
2 no note, no title added entry
3 no note, title added entry
