The indoor air quality in any building is the result of the interaction between the site, the climate, building systems, contamination sources and the building occupants. Four major elements are involved in the development of indoor air quality problems. These are The Great Outdoors, Equipment Systems, Pathways and Occupants.

Sources

Outdoors Common outdoor sources include pollen, dust, fungal spores, industrial pollutants and general vehicle exhaust.

Equipment

The main function of a building's heating venting and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment is to provide thermal comfort for the building occupants. As a distributive system, it can affect air quality due to dust or dirt in ductwork, microbiological growth in drip pans or on coils, improper use of biocides, sealants and/or cleaning compounds and improper venting. Other equipment contributing to the quality of air are emissions from office equipment (volatile organic compounds, ozone). supplies, (solvents, toners, ammonia) and elevator motors and other mechanical systems.

Pathways

Airflow patterns in buildings result from the combine action of mechanical ventilation, human activity and natural forces. Air entering a room through the supply registers or diffusers is diverted or obstructed by partitions and walls furnishings and redirected by opening that provide pathways fir air movement. The movement of people has a major impact on the movement of pollutants. Some of the pathways change as doors and windows open and close. It is useful to think of the entire building as part of the air distribution system.

Occupants

Smoking, cooking, body odor, and cosmetic odors add negative elements to the indoor air quality. Cleaning materials, emersions from trash, use of deodorizers and fragrances and airborne dust and dirt are also ingredients.
