Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1400-1468) of Mainz, Germany, is credited in 15th-century documents with the invention of printing with moveable type, c. 1450. The early years of printing press are represented at Bridwell Library by no fewer than 1,000 incunabula (15th-century printed editions), including the "Trier II" fragment of 31 leaves from the Gutenberg Bible.
