at Bridwell Library
8 September - 8 December 2003

17. MORE CANON LAW

BONIFACIUS VIII, Pont. Max. (c. 1234-1303). Liber sextus decretalium. Commentary by Johannes Andreae (d. 1348). Mainz: Peter Schoeffer, 5 April 1473.

Illuminated pageThis is Schoeffer’s third printing of the Liber sextus decretalium, following his editions of 1465 and 1470. In Bridwell Library’s extremely well-preserved copy, an exquisitely illuminated initial B appears in the space provided on the first leaf. Facing this, on an added fifteenth-century flyleaf, a contemporary owner has added his own manuscript index. The untrimmed bottom edge of the book is still inscribed in large gothic letters “Sextus decretaliu[m].”
