The Complutensian Polyglot

Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros sponsored and funded the six volume work that was to become the first polyglot edition of the entire Bible. An editorial team began work in 1502 and the final work appeared posthumously in 1520. The group of scholars attempted to achieve textual accuracy by consulting as many manuscripts as they could purchase or borrow. This work combines Greek, the Latin Vulgate, Hebrew and Aramaic. Both the Greek and the Aramaic are clarified by the inclusion of a Latin translation. The Greek sections represent he first printings of the Greek New Testament and the Septuagint. Five volumes contain the Bible itself, while the sixth is a group of reference texts for the scholar. Significantly, Cardinal Ximènes and his editorial team did not modify the Vulgate itself in any way.
