THE HORNBY ASHENDENE COLLECTION was purchased with Bridwell Foundation funds in 1976 from Michael Hornby, the son of Charles St John Hornby, founder of the great Ashendene Press. Covering the years 1895-1935, the collection includes the archives of the Press (working drawings, correspondence, business records, photographs, proofs), as well as examples of all 130 volumes published by the Press -- both on paper and the rare vellum copies. In addition, Bridwell owns the hand-press on which many of the Ashendene book were printed. The Ashendene Dante, of which Bridwell possesses one of only seven known copies printed on vellum, is one of the so-called “Triple Crown” of typography, the other two being the Kelmscott Press edition of Chaucer's works and the Doves Press Bible.
