Some Useful Resources

 

Academic Search Complete.  Online Resource.  A comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with over 5,300 full-text periodicals, including 4,400 peer-reviewed journals. It also offers indexing and abstracts for more than 9,300 journals and a total of 10,900 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1865, with the majority of full text titles in native (searchable) PDF format.

L’Année Philologique.  Online Resouce.  A complicated but essential bibliographic index for classical scholarship.  See Bridwell’s reference librarian for instructions.

ArtStor.  Online Resource.  An ever-expanding, searchable database of high quality scanned images of art collections in cultural institutions around the world, as well as important artistic and architectural monuments.  Recently added is the Quick Time Virtual Reality panoramas of important architectural sites, providing the immediacy of 360 degree video.

JStor.  Online Resource.  An archive of full-text scholarly journals, offering researchers the ability to retrieve scanned images of journal issues is a wide variety of humanities, including Archaeology, Art History, Classical Studies, Feminist & Women’s Studies, History, Philosophy, and Religion.

Loeb Classical Library.  Bridwell Reference Room.  Produced by Harvard University Press since 1911, this series of books presents up-to-date text and accurate and literate English translation face each other page by page. The editors provide substantive introductions as well as essential critical and explanatory notes and selective bibliographies.

OCLC World Cat.  Online Resource.  An indispensable catalog of books and other materials (including maps, images, electronic resources, music, archives, etc.) held in libraries worldwide.  Includes an item’s bibliographic information, a list of libraries that own it, and an easy link to SMU’s Interlibrary Loan for borrowing.  Or, try the latest product from OCLC, www.WorldCat.org a new FREE web site that allows you to put in your zip code and search for books in your area!

Oxford Classical Dictionary.  Bridwell Reference DE 5 .09 1996.  An indispensable, authoritative one-volume guide to all aspects of the ancient world in accessible prose with useful bibliographies. 

Online! (citation styles).  Online Resource.  A guide for citing various sources of electronic information in correct scholarly style, including Chicago, from which Turabian is derived. 

Perseus Digital Library.  Online Resource.  A classics gateway, sponsored by the Classics Department at Tufts University, that provides a wealth of source material.

Project Muse.  Online Resource.  Another archive of full-text scholarly journals, including those covering history, literature, and philology,
