Formatting the Word of God: The Charles Caldwell Ryrie Collection: An Exhibition at Bridwell Library, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, October 1998 through January 1999 |

Winner of the 1999 Katherine Kyes Leab & Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Catalogue Award for Excellence, presented by the American Library Association and the Association of College and Research Libraries, Rare Books & Manuscripts Section. This exhibition, drawn from the comprehensive Bible collection of the eminent biblical scholar, Dr. Charles Ryrie of Dallas, explored "the compelling idea that our engagement with the Word of God is, in many ways, influenced by its format." Perhaps the library's most distinguished publishing achievement to date, the catalog consists of sixty-eight scholarly essays written by Dr. Ryrie, Dr. Valerie Hotchkiss, former Bridwell Director Decherd Turner, Dr. David Price, and three members of the Bridwell staff. For the first time, each item was illustrated in full color. In the spirit of exploring new formats, the catalog also was issued as a CD-ROM that included hundreds of additional digitized images from the exhibition. Thus, this project set the stage for Bridwell Library's development of electronic-media or Internet-based exhibitions in the near future. Formatting the Word of God: The Charles Caldwell Ryrie Collection, edited by Valerie R. Hotchkiss and Charles C. Ryrie in collaboration with Duane Harbin, David Price, Page A. Thomas, Decherd Turner, and Eric Marshall White. Bridwell Library, Dallas, Texas, 1998. 124 pp., 73 illus., $30.00 (plus shipping and handling). |
