Guidelines For Submissions

Here’s how to submit your design.

Please send your design to:
    Bridwell Library
    Attn: Eric White
    6005 Bishop Blvd
    Dallas TX 75275
  (for more info, call 214-768-3483)

Each submission should include 1) a sample binding, 2) your design proposal for binding The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and 3) your Artist Statement/Design Intent forms.

1) Your Sample Binding should:

· reflect your current level of craftsmanship and preferably use some of the techniques you have proposed in your design.
· be sent within an enclosure such as a phase-box, slipcase, or drop-spine box.

2) Your Design should:

· be mounted on 4-ply matboard, 32" x 20".
· illustrate the full outside opening of the book and any endpaper designs. Your illustration may be smaller than the actual book but reduced no more than 50%.
· use colors as accurate as possible to the hue and intensity of the colors intended for the design. Textures should also be reflected in the design. Including swatches of the materials you intend to use provides the judges with the best possible context for judging your work. Please adhere all samples to the matboard. Our tip: neat design boards make a better impression on judges!
· if necessary, include only brief, preferably handwritten explanatory notes written directly onto the matboard. (An artist’s statement and longer explanations may be written on the forms included with this mailing.)
· include your name on the lower right hand corner of the back of the design board.

Please Note:

· Your sample binding and design should be shipped with adequate protection, especially for  the design board’s corners!
· Your sample binding and design will be kept at the Bridwell Library Special Collections
throughout the judging, catalog photography, and post exhibition periods. Those included
in the exhibition will be asked whether they would like their designs to become part of Bridwell Library’s permanent collection of American Design Binding.

We know that a great deal of hard work goes into designing and we’re grateful for your participation. If selected, your design and sample binding will be featured in a full-color catalog of the exhibition and your work will be on display in the exhibition gallery of Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University, from June 8 through August 1, 2003. You will also receive a complimentary catalog of the competition.
