The B.S. in Biochemistry
This program has a core of required courses and two options for choosing additional upper-division courses. Option 1 is designed to meet the certification guidelines of the American Chemical Society (ACS) for professional training in biochemistry. Option 2 allows for a slightly stronger emphasis on biology, but does not qualify for ACS certification. Students planning to attend graduate school are advised to take in addition at least 3 credits of Undergraduate Research (CHEM 4177/4297, BIOL 3398, or BIOL 4398). A biochemistry major can graduate "with with departmental distinction" by successfully completing a special program of study that includes independent reading and research culminating in a senior thesis.
