Welcome to University Park
University Park is a predominantly residential community of 23,000 residents. Home to Southern Methodist University, the City is also known for its attractive homes, beautiful parks, and numerous churches. The location of University Park in north-central Dallas provides easy access to a broad range of cultural, recreational, shopping, and business activities.
A diverse range of 8,600 homes supports a unique population base. Seventy-two percent of residents over age 25 have college or advanced degrees, making University Park among the most highly-educated cities in the nation.
The City prides itself on providing prompt and personal attention to requests for services. A primary goal of the City is to provide and maintain a secure residential atmosphere and, through a hometown policing approach, the City maintains crime rates among the lowest in the metropolitan area.
University Park City Hall is located at 3800 University Blvd. It’s open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The City telephone switchboard number is 214-363-1644.
For much more information about the City, SMU students are encouraged to visit the City’s Web site at www.uptexas.org, or call the City’s 3-1-1 Information Line. It offers around-the-clock information about City services and many off-campus events.
Frequently asked questions:
Q: Does the City have restrictions on the number of unrelated people who can live in an apartment, condominium or townhouse?
Yes. City Code states, “Family means any number of individuals living together as a single housekeeping unit, in which not more than two (2) individuals are unrelated by blood, marriage or adoption.” Failure to comply with this requirement can result in a citation and potential fine.
Q: Who investigates reported crimes?
The SMU Police Department will investigate any on-campus crime and has the authority to do so. When reporting a crime, if you have any question about jurisdiction or authority, call 9-1-1 to immediately reach the University Park Police Department. SMU students should also be aware that, while the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, Dallas County Constables and the Texas Department of Public Safety won’t respond to calls for service, they all have authority to make arrests on campus and conduct searches with search warrants.
Q: Who responds to fire or medical emergencies?
The University Park Fire Department. In an emergency call 9-1-1.
Q: Which police department responds to loud music and noise complaints?
The SMU Police Department handles all on-campus complaints. Though relatively few in number, amounting to about four a week, off-campus noise complaints are handled by the University Park Police Department.
Q: Are parking citations issued by both police departments?
Yes. On-campus violations are the responsibility of the SMU Police Department. All City streets, plus the parking spaces around Burleson Park (University & Daniel) are University Park property, and UPPD has jurisdiction. Jaywalking citations can be issued by either department depending on the location of the incident.
