It’s Finals - What Can I Do To Help My Student?
Finals can be a stress filled time for students. Below are some helpful reminders:
- Encourage your student to get as much sleep as possible.
- Don’t miss any review sessions – they can be invaluable.
- All-nighters are rarely productive.
- Start reading now – and keep reading. It is not too late!
- Partying the weekend before finals may sound like fun and a great last “hurrah” before hitting the books, but the time could be better spent at the library!
- Encourage your son or daughter to eat fewer sweets and more fruit, vegetables and protein. Watch the caffeine – it can sometimes negatively affect concentration.
- Send a card with a note of encouragement.
- Be sure they have money to make any necessary copies or to buy pens, pencils and bluebooks if needed.
- Send a care package with soup, power bars, trail mix and other healthy snacks.
- Remind your student to exercise; it’s a great stress reliever – the new Dedman Center is fabulous!
- If they are unsure about a final – it is not too late to go talk to their professor.
- Stay away from distractions. Make a written study schedule for each class and stick with it.
- Find a new, quieter place to study. Try the LEC – it has study rooms.
- Wear comfortable clothes for study and test taking. Always carry a sweatshirt in case the room is cold.
- Don’t walk alone at night when returning from the library – call the Giddy-Up carts or SMU Police for a ride. The number is 214-768-3333.
