This lectureship was endowed with an anonymous gift to honor the anthropological careers
of George and Mary Foster, both of whom received their Ph.D. degress from the University
of California at Berkeley. In 1990, George Foster received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
degree from Southern Methodist University.
