Ladislav P. Novak was acknowledged on July 31, 2003, for his generous donation
to the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institution.
Dr. Novak, retired Professor of Anthropology at SMU, has focused his research
on biological growth and aging, physiology of exercise, and the effects
of physical activity, as well as disease, on body composition. In addition,
he has studied the effect of exercise and dietary changes on cardiac patients
after myocardial infarction and bypass surgery. He has been awarded the
Commemorative Medal of Hrdlicka, the highest Czechoslovakian honor in
the field of anthropology. Dr. Novak has been instrumental in the promotion
of cooperative educational exchange programs between UT Southwestern Medical
School, Masaryk University, Brno-Czech Republic, and Baylor University Medical Center.
The Ladislav P. Novak Papers will compliment the Smithsonian Institution's National
Anthropological Archives collection relating to the study of medical anthropology.
