Research Interests

My general research interests include the study of hunter-gatherer settlement systems and technology.  I am interested in how these two factors are optimally organized in diverse ecological settings.  Currently, I am studying Folsom adaptive behavior in the Gunnison Basin, Colorado.  This topographically isolated setting contains many types of resources within a relatively small area.  Work at the Mountaineer site suggests that it served at times as a residential base camp from which logistically organized foraging parties operated.  Recent research at Mountaineer is summarized in a poster given at the 2005 Rocky Mountain Anthropological Conference (2005 Mountaineer poster [2 mb pdf]).  We have also begun work at two other Folsom sites in the Basin – the Flat Top site (2005 Flat Top poster [2 mb pdf]), and the Lanning site, which is being analyzed by Casey Dukeman at Western State College.

Along with my colleagues Jason M. LaBelle and John D. Seebach I am also working on a project that seeks to further refine our ideas concerning Folsom subsistence and land-use by examining broad patterns in Folsom site structure.  We have compiled an “atlas” of Folsom site structure that provides the framework for this study.  A copy of the atlas, which contains general spatial information for 25 well documented Folsom sites is available here (Folsom atlas [1 mb pdf]).  The sites in the atlas are all at the same scale, allowing easy comparisons of overall site size and cluster spacing.
