In this proposed project (August 2007 for NSF funding), we will document and systematically measure the shared environment of rural and urban Mexican immigrant families, whose members are at high or moderate risk for type 2 diabetes.
Employing community members as research assistants, as well as undergraduate and graduate level anthropology students, we will describe and analyze hierarchical power structures within these families. We will be looking for details on food preparation and consumption as they are 1) described by family members in free listing interviews 2) presented in narratives, and 3) enacted in the daily lives of the individuals living within the study households (videotaping).
