Beyond Basketball

New Practice Center Benefits Other Student Athletes Too

Crum Basketball Center drawingThe new Crum Basketball Center will benefit numerous student athletes in addition to the men's and women's basketball teams. Other teams currently work their practices into Moody Coliseum's crowded schedule. "Since the basketball teams will be practicing in Crum, it will free up the court at Moody," says junior Caitlin Rainbird, an outside hitter with the Mustang volleyball team. "Instead of having to schedule early-morning and late-night practices to work around classes and other teams, our coaches can schedule more convenient practice times year-round."

SMU took its men's and women's basketball programs to a new level with the Dec. 8 groundbreaking for the Crum Basketball Center, a state-of-the-art facility scheduled to open in time for fall practice.

"[This center] will allow us to attract and develop the very best student-athletes from across the country and help return Mustang basketball to national prominence," said Matt Doherty, SMU head men's basketball coach.

The $13-million, 43,000 square-foot facility, located at SMU Boulevard and Dublin Street, will include two full-size practice courts, players' locker rooms and lounges, a fully-equipped training and rehabilitation room with in-ground hydrotherapy pools, a strength and conditioning room, coaches' offices and film editing rooms. A tunnel will link the center to Moody Coliseum.

"The strong commitment SMU has made to basketball will be evident in this new facility. The Center will provide a definite edge in our recruiting the best players to SMU," said Rhonda Rompola, SMU head women's basketball coach.

The Center is made possible by a leadership gift from Sylvie P. and Gary T. Crum. Support the Center through the Make a Difference on the Court program.

Not only would I like to see baseball return, but I would like to see swimming brought back to the top 10 status. An indoor 50 meter pool with 10 meter diving will be a necessity to attract the top swimmers and divers. The old Perkins basketball stadium turned into the natatorium 50 years ago has become an embarassment when compared to the rest of the SMU physical plant.

Although having baseball back at the Hilltop would be great, it seems like lacrosse is the hot sport sweeping the country. I even heard we have a pretty good club team now.

I really agree about the need for a new indoor swimming center for NCAA competition. It is amazing the swim teams have fared as well as they have; recruiting must be a real challenge with the present indoor natatorium.

I'm not the biggest baseball fan in the world, but it would be col to have baseball at SMU. Given the success of Rice in 2003 (boooooo!!!!) and the Astros here in Houston these past couple of years, it would be cool to see SMU in the mix and competing for some championships. What can be done??
