10 New and Cool Things Around SMU

Hotel Palomar: Called an "urban resort" upon its opening in September 2006, Hotel Palomar is bringing back sophistication to the southeast corner of Mockingbird Lane and North Central Expressway. The complex includes Exhale Spa, Trader Vic's restaurant and Central 214 restaurant and lounge.
Hotel Lumen: On Hillcrest Avenue across from Meadows School of the Arts, the four-story Hotel Lumen offers a nearby retro-themed lodging option for SMU visitors. Behind the hotel is Social, a restaurant and lounge known for its classic cocktails.
NorthPark Center: Ten years of planning went into the spring 2006 unveiling of the new wing at NorthPark Center at Park Lane and North Central Expressway. An AMC 15 movie theater and 110 new stores, including Barneys New York, opened in the Dallas landmark.
Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station: In the trendy retail and housing complex at Mockingbird Lane and North Central Expressway, the Angelika screens independent and specialty films and has been named "Best Movie Theater" by the Dallas Observer.
Dallas Center for the Performing Arts: Scheduled for completion in 2009, the center in the downtown Dallas Arts District will feature a 10-acre urban park and facilities designed by Rem Koolhaas and Norman Foster for theater, music, opera and dance.
Victory Park: Just north of downtown Dallas off Interstate 35E, Victory Park now boasts upscale residences and shops, in addition to American Airlines Center, home of the Mavericks. A highly anticipated piece of the complex, The W Hotel, opened in June.
Nasher Sculpture Center: The museum and garden in the downtown Dallas Arts District display Raymond and Patsy Nasher's extensive collection of modern sculpture, including works by Calder, Matisse, Miró and Picasso.
Katy Trail: A haven for Dallas nature lovers, the 3.5-mile bicycle and pedestrian path traces the greenbelt the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT or "Katy") Railroad followed. Future expansion plans have the trail connecting Mockingbird Station with Victory Park.
Southside on Lamar: Formerly the Sears Building, Southside on Lamar, just south of downtown Dallas, today is home to Gilley's Dallas Western Club, upscale lofts and galleries featuring new and eclectic artists.
Women's Museum at Fair Park: When it opened in 2000, The Women's Museum became the country's first comprehensive women's history museum. Traveling exhibits share space with the permanent collection, which covers the women's movement and advances in arts, sports and politics.*****
Still around after all these years: Burger House, Bubba's Cooks Country, Desperados Mexican Restaurant, Ozona Grill and Bar, New York Sub, Kuby's Sausage House and Goff's Hamburgers, which recently moved across the street from SMU on Hillcrest Avenue.
Did we leave anything out? Post your favorite place here.
Let's not forget Campisi's on Mockingbird that has been an SMU mainstay since the late 40s!
Mariano's, The Hoffbrau House
Are you kidding? What about Snuffer's and The Blue Goose?'
Also, don't miss Peggy Sue Barbeque in Snyder Plaza. They have great brisket, the cole slaw is tangy and delicious, and they have the original (Raplh) & Peggy's Beef Bar fried pie recipes. The coconut creme pie is amazing!
The Amore Italian restaurant
Speaking of Lowest Greenville Avenue, what about the ol' Greenville Avenue Bar and Grille! Home to early Vaughn Brothers concerts!
And Highland Park Village with great restaurants (Patrizios', Mi Cocina) and great shopping (Hermes, CK, Jimmy Choo) ...
how bout those donut cakes from Lone Star donuts and Andrews, Park it Markit, 8.0., Cardinal Puffs....good times.
Javier's for traditional Mexican food...
Definitely Snuffers! We still have to stop by for a burger whenever we're in Dallas.
JD's Chippery is still there. I miss those amazing ham and cheese muffins!
JD Chippery!!!! The best cherry lemonades and cookies EVER!
How about Long Island Iced Teas at the Old Church?
Definitely miss Peggy Sue's BBQ, and the Chistmas walks along Snyder Plaza, including snow (once)!
Sorry to bear the bad news but Mariano's and Hofbrau are long gone and GBG (Greenville Ave Bar & Grill) is recently gone. But many classics remain and so many new ones are coming up. This town is becoming a real city...and Trader Vic's will be back in March -- what more can we ask?
Take a date to Kirby's Steakhouse for fine dining.
No question, Campisi's is the all-time greatest and most famous SMU/Dallas restaurant. All the famous athletes/celebrities that have eaten there, not to mention the "Mob ties"! And the pizza, come on, it doesn't get any better!
Awww Shucks! Snuffers! Black Eyed Pea - I lost lots of weight when I left Texas! GOOD EATING
Snuffer's, Blue Goose, Stan's, Javier's (if you can find it!), Campisi's Egyptian Pizza. Yikes, I am getting hungry for Dallas. I need to make it up from Austin soon.
Mariano's isn't gone, they just moved (Skillman & Larmanda)
What about Primos Mexican Grill?
Wild About Harry's frozen custard is the best custard around. Harry's is on Knox/Henderson right across from Crate & Barrel. I was sad to see EZ's Pizza and Burgers go.
Don't forget NY Sub...
Does anyone remember Gordo's?
I do not miss a visit to LaDuni's on McKinney when I visit my daughter. Best mojoitos in the world!
I guess SMU alums are really into food..
What about Milo's??? It was an SMU institution!
Definitely miss Snuffer's--love those cheese fries--and what about La Madeline? The Caesar salad is the best.
Is Pietro's still there? Somewhere off Greenville Ave. 30 years ago...
Does anyone still take road trips to Fort Worth to eat at Joe T Garcia's? The trip back to Dallas was usually pretty interesting!!! And Old Church...it's been years since I thought of that. Those were some good Long Island Iced Teas.
Green Elephant HAS still be there. Believe it or not but I also liked their food - nothing better than a Blood Mary and a hamburger the next day!
Does anyone remember Stan's Blue Note for beer in Mason jars and pickled summer sausage, and John's Cafe to make you feel better the next day?
Gordo's still exists on Lovers Lane west of Preston, they just moved a few years back - and the pizza is still very good, give 'em a visit!
SNUFFERS (& their cheese fries) is a must!!!
In the early 50's Goff's on Lovers Lane was the place we went after intermural softball games. Now it is just across the street and still as good as ever!
I really miss Ball's Hamburgers, the greatest hamburger on the planet! If you have not been, you have to check it out!
The Jack's Burger House on Hillcrest, Gloria's on Greenville Ave, the Royal Rack also on Greenville Ave I could go on...
What about Kuby's?
Market Izmir and Deli across from the Granada theater on lower Greenville has the best hummus in the world.
Mustang Donuts!!!
Hannah's Pies--a long way from campus, but well worth it.
What about Salih's barbecue? It used to be in Preston Plaza, but the last time I was in Dallas (1999 it was gone and moved to some suburb, ugh.
Salih's barbecue--used to be in Preston Plaza (probably not there anymore either). The last time I was in Dallas (1999) it had moved to the suburbs. I found it, but it wasn't as good. Proof positive you can't go home again.
Old Church, elbow to elbow on Thursday nights at The Stables with peanut hulls all over the floor, TGIFridays, Cardinal Puffs, Moonrocks from Lone Star Donuts, fresh shrimp at Little Switzerland at Inwood and Lovers Lane---Do any of these places still exist?
No mention of Snuffer's and cheese fries! I can't believe it.
Absolutely agree on Snuffer's, Campisi's and Stan's. How about north Gville? Caliente, Filling Station?
The Green Elephant is now the Barley House.... the owners of the Green Elephant sold it 2 years ago. The Green Elephant moved behind Ozona's but changed the name to HomeBar. Not the same but it's ok. Mike from 77 - none of those places are still here... not that I know of. TGIFridays was by North Park and went out of business... sorry!
SMU's own restaurant, at the Meadows Museum, The Gates Restaurant. It is wonderful and everyone from SMU should support this.
Diane Staley
For a little elegance, St. Martin's "Bistro" on Greenville still prevails, with nightly piano playing oldies and some newies too. No better place anywhere for continental recipes with delicate sauces or robust steaks.
Prego on Greenville still cooks up marvelous Italian dishes, steaks and pizza and very strong drinks.
Someone mentioned Lone Star Donuts, but last time I was in Dallas near SMU I discovered that Lone Star Donuts doesn't exist any more! :-( No donut cakes! :-(
Randy Tar, Ojedas, Arthurs, Daddy's Money happy hour, Point After,
Snuffers for sure. Blue Goose a sure bet. Don't forget Milo Butterfingers, Yale Ice House, The Green Elephant, Remember Cactus Rose that became the Black Eyed Pea on Greenville? How about the 'tune-up' from the Filling Station, the 5 lb burger from Judge Roy Beans. I remember going to Fat Tuesday, but not leaving! Bubba's Chicken was awesome on Sundays in Synder Plaza. Great times in the '80s!
