RicHARD Herrscher
Richard Herrscher has excelled in two careers that are worlds apart – athletics and dentistry. A student leader in SMU’s class of 1958, he earned a B.A. degree through the pre-medical studies program. He was sophomore class president, Rotunda favorite and a member of the varsity baseball and basketball teams. He played in the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament in 1956 and was named Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1958.
After graduating, Herrscher played professional baseball for five years, concluding his career with the New York Mets. He then enrolled in Baylor College of Dentistry, earning a D.D.S. degree. After two years in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Baylor for an advanced degree in orthodontics. He spent 20 years in private practice before serving several years on the cranial-facial faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He returned to private orthodontics practice in 1994.
A loyal supporter of SMU athletics, Herrscher has served on the boards of the Mustang Club, Alumni Association and Lettermen’s Association. He was founder and organizing director of the Hilltop Sports Camp. He also has served on the boards of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Dallas Child Guidance Center, Dental Health Programs and Salesmanship Club of Dallas and as an elder at Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
