SMU Martial Arts Club Yokage Aiki Ju Jutsu
![]()
- People The SMU Martial Arts Club operates under the direction of Mr. Bryan Robbins of the SMU Wellness department. Dr. Bruce Fabijonas of the SMU Mathematics department acts as a liaison for the club when Mr. Robbins is unavailable. Classes are taught by Mr. Robbins and senior club members.
- What art do we train in Technically, we study Aiki Ju Jutsu. The name, however, often is not familiar to non-martial artists. Therefore, we are referred to as the "Aikido class" to make things easy for everyone involved (including this web site address).
- Meet times The club meets twice a week. Class meets on Wednesdays from 7:00pm until 9:00pm and Saturdays from 10am until 12:00am. The actual content is up to the individual instructor, though guided by belt test requirements.
- Finding us We meet in the mat room of Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. This is building 98 on the campus map. There is a parking lot in front of the building. If you are not affiliated with SMU, please inform the front desk that you are there for the "Aikido" class and proceed directly to the mat room.
- Who can train Anyone, regardless of affiliation with SMU, is welcomed to attend our classes.
- Cost Faculty, staff, and students pay $20 per month. Dues for persons not affiliated with SMU are slightly higher.
- Wellness Mr. Robbins teaches Wellness classes (WELL 2148) in Aiki Ju Jutsu (labeled "Aikido") and in Karate (WELL 2149) each fall and spring semester. The Wellness class covers similar material as you will find the club, but membership in the club is not dependent on enrollment in the Wellness class or vice-versa. There is no longer a karate club independent of the Wellness class. Dr. Tom Barry, Vice President for Executive Affairs at SMU, assists Mr. Robbins in teaching the Wellness class each semester. Mr. Robbins and Dr. Barry have been training together for over 20 years.
